Having recently returned from a trip to Egypt and having the pleasure? of using Monarch Airlines i thought i would share my observations with you, to perhaps make your trip easier.
Firstly my outward journey was delayed by 21 hours - I realise this can happen to any Airline, although certainly having limited Aircraft available on stand-by did not help the situation. What I did find hard to take was the lack of information given out by the Airline via the groud Handling Agency.
Yes I was put up in a Hotel overnight but there was no sign of any sort of apology. Also handing out £4.00 vouchers for breakfast, at Airport prices, will hardly allow you to overdo it!
Once on the plane it was really like being on a cattle truck. The plane appeared quite new but legroom was minimal to say the least. During the 4 hour 50 minute flight we were served one meal which included a tea or coffee (this was the only thing free of charge)
I found it quite irratating to be hassled during the rest of the trip with staff asking me if I wanted a soft drink (£1.00 a can) or an alcoholic drink (£1.50 for a small can of beer) This went on and on as well as being asked at different times if I wanted to hire headphones (1.00) Duty Free, Pringles crisps and chocolates, Raffle Tickets and even to make a charity donation.
Believe me at the end of the flight i had lost count of the number of times I had been interupted from reading my book.
Also at the check in 'extra leg room seats' were available for £25.00 a seat. Add it all up and you could end up spending a small fortune before ever leaving the plane.
I realise that Monarch are trying to make themselves Money but i found the whole experience extremely tacky.
Going on a package deal as I did, Monarch were part of the deal. If you are booked to travel with them, do yourselves a favour and take an extra can of drink and a bite to eat with you. Also do not expect anyhting else other than a very basic service.
Airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet make their cheap and cheerful attitude to flying quite public. On the other hand Monarch imply that they are a high class airline - do not be fooled - they are not.
