I flew with Monarch from Gatwick to Male (Maldives). My nan had saved up for this trip for my 16th birthday and had been several times herself.
We were the first people to check in, we knew this because they (very helpfully) opened it for us. My nan asked if it would be possible to get a window seat, explaining she wanted me to experience the view as we flew into the Maldives. We were assured that of course that was fine, it was all very polite and we went away smiling!
However, when we got onto the plane and to our row (9) the smile was instantly gone. Not only did we not have a window seat, ours was (we thought) the ONLY row without a window at all! Even for me, only 5 ft 3, it was extremely claustrophobic. The grey plastic "wall" curved round and made me feel hunched in- for the whole of the 10 hour flight.
As soon as the opportunity arose (before we had left the ground) we informed a stewardess of the problem, who dismissively said that if there was a window seat free when everyone was seated we could move. We never found out as she never came back as promised. When i tried to get her attention later on i was again dismissed.
Despite my discomfort the rest of the flight was without incident, it was on time, average legroom, meal etc... I had a wonderful holiday and of course, being fortunate enough to see such a beautiful country i soon forgot about the whole thing...until the return flight.
Again we asked for a window seat and politely explained what had happened on our outbound flight- which would have had any airline worth their name making sure your flight goes without a hitch (on a more recent holiday I flew with Delta, who, when we had missed a connection, put us in what seemed to be 'economy plus' on our return flight without us even asking). Anyway, we were treated politely, given row 14 and went off to departures confident our flight home would be much more comfortable.
As it turns out there are more than one rows with what feels like half of a plastic coffin where a window should be and - you guessed it- row 14 was one of them. I was absolutely astonished that this had happened again and could not help but wonder how it could have possibly happened accidentally. Am i wrong in thinking the people who assign you your seats are aware of where there are windows and where there are not? Of the layout of the plane?
Again we were effectively ignored when we tried to talk to a stewardess. We complained when we back home but heard nothing back.
When you pay so much for a flight and are nothing but polite you do not expect what was either complete incompetence (which I suspect was the problem) or deliberate nastiness (the book Air Babylon has made me a lot more suspicious of the air industry!!).
I hope never to fly with Monarch again and it would be an absolute last resort. Unfortunately they are one of the only airlines that fly to the Maldives and should i ever be lucky enough to afford to go again, i may not have a choice. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Hi Sarah,
wow thats terrible customer service. We have never flew with Monach because of the bad reviews- BUT this time we will be flying to the Maldives as Cosmos use them and the island we want to stay on First Choice dont do. We have paid for an upgrade. I will be doing a review when I get back- Wish me luck - Cheers Mary
PS which Island did you stay on?

gosh, I can't believe you didn't get a window seat.
I often fly with monarch scheduled to alicante and fly over the pyranees which is a fantastic experience when you have a window seat. On my last flight outbound I sat in seat 1F on an airbus A321 and had 2 windows allto myself!!! I love monarch, shame it didn't go too well for you.

Thanks everybody! I would have written more, it was a little while back though, so can't remember everything...enough to ensure i won't be flying with them again though :)
