Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, Denham

Advantages: Seeing dolphins up close and swimming with them for free
Disadvantages: Touristy!

...Monkey Mia is on the West Coast of Australia situated in Shark Bay, a world heritage listed area, and I might add a very beautiful area of the world!! I got here on the Easyrider backpacker bus on a trip from Perth to Broome (www.easyrider.com.au which cost $615 and took 7 days altogether). However you could get here by local bus from Denham or try www.greyhound.com.au which have buses going all over Australia. This area is famous for its dolphins which is what I did so all I'm going to review. There is a resort here with a few places you can stay overnight but I didn't visit these. Basically dolphins come in ALMOST every morning. With a 99.6% attendance rate (much better than some of the people I went to school with!) you would have to be REALLY unlucky to miss them. ...If you want to stay on the Monkey Mia resort then accommodation is expensive, but in my opinion it is worth it for the experience of these amazing dolphins. Tourists line up in the shallows (under supervision) and the wild dolphins just swim in to check out what's going on. Only a select few are asked to come forward to interact with them so the experience isn't as hands on for most people as they would like, but I still found it quite amazing. We attended a talk held at the resort by one of the scientists who has been studying the group for years. This was extremely interesting. We were told how each dolphin is identified by the individual markings on their fins, and about their histories. ...are monitored by the resort staff because the mammals should not be feed too much as they could become dependant on humans. On the other hand, ocean sealife thrives in Monkey Mia, so it could happen that a dolphin will offer you fresh fish. You are advised to accept the fish, as it is a sign of friendship.
