My boyfriend and I went to the South of France in the summer, we stayed in Nice after looking at the horrendous prices of the hotels in Monte Carlo! Then we planned for our first day to get a bus to Monte Carlo. The bus ride was great, they were more like coaches; comfy seats, seat belts, tv, AC, a toilet, everything!
We knew that Monte Carlo was a very luxurious city, so thought that we would be living the high life for the day, unfortunately not!
When we got off the bus, we went into the local shopping precinct. We entered on royal red carpets (which are all over monte carlo!) We were with our backpacks and wearing relatively scruffy clothes, and the whole time we were there, we were looked down on. We knew that there were going to be people alot better off than us, but we didn't expect to be treated like this.
We went to look round some boutiques, and we were followed around everywhere we went. This even happened in the supermarket we went into. This made us feel very unwelcome.
Apart from all that, it was a beautiful city, the streets and beaches were pristine and litter free, and the vast amount of palm trees made us feel like we were in Los Angeles, rather than the South of France.
My boyfriend enjoyed looking and walking on the Grand Prix track, and I enjoyed eating our lunch in the gorgeous Japanese Garden in the center of Monte Carlo... i would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't have cost us £25 for a sandwich! Aah well...
We could afford nothing in monte carlo, and we were ignored everywhere we went by the inhabitants of Monte Carlo. In the end, we went back to Nice where we could get just as nice beaches, but be treated in a more polite and courteous way.
If you have lots of money to throw away, and will wear nothing but Prada or Escada, then go to Monte Carlo. There is pretty much nothing to do there. We discovered a small cinema, but other than very expensive designer boutiques, thats about it.
How could I forget the casino! Nothing particularly special really, a nice building, but that's it. You have to be 21 to get in, therefore we didn't get in unfortunately, so maybe the inside compensates for what it lacks on the outside. :-)
So choose wisely when deciding whether to visit Monte Carlo!

Advantages: A great challnge for the drivers with a prestigious prize for the winner. Disadvantages: Cramped, overtaking is non-existent, can be a terminally dull race.
