I enjoy the conveniences of modern life (gadgets!) and travel (sun & shopping!). I believe in getting good value for money when spending my hard earned cash, and though I believe you get what you pay for I love finding a bargain!

We stayed at the Monte Carlo resort hotel for 5 nights in June 2007.
The hotel has an excellent location, is reasonably priced and has all the facilities you would expect. However the European theme is a little dated and the newer, larger resort casinos have better facilities and perhaps also have a bit more style and flair.
The Monte Carlo is located at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip, near to the more famous MGM Grand and the New York, New York resort casino. Across the street is the ‘Coke Bottle’ which has a half-price ticket booth for shows and tours and the quirky M&M’s world, which is fun for all ages.
Check in was easy, there are a large number of check-in agents at reception,
and you can checkout automatically via the TV in the room. Staff were courteous and attentive, as I’ve come to expect in America, though at 3000 rooms, the size of the hotel could make it seem very impersonal.
The rooms are fairly large, especially by European standards, and are very comfortable. All rooms have air conditioning and an in room safe, but as with most Las Vegashotels there are no tea/coffee making facilities and breakfast is not included in the room rate.
Our room on the 18th floor had an excellent view of the strip but there was quite a bit of noise that made it through the double glazing from the major construction site next door. I thought the décor was a little dated, and the tinted windows made the room seem dull.
The rooms were very clean but I noticed it took some time for staff to clear left-over room service trays from outside adjacent rooms and the corridor was a little shabby with evidence of some peeling wallpaper and worn carpeting.
There is a small food court near reception with a selection of fast food outlets (Starbucks, Häagen Dazs, Subway, etc.) which was perfect for picking up breakfast or snacks to take back to our room.
There were a number of more upmarket restaurants and, of course, a buffet. We had a meal in the Italian themed Market City Caffe, which was excellent quality and very good value for money. However we thought the other restaurants and buffet were a little expensive compared to the surrounding casinos and so gave them a miss.
There is a small convenience store off the reception area selling travellers essentials such as toothpaste as well as snacks and soft drinks, and souvenirs. However prices were very high and we found it was considerably cheaper to buy snacks and drinks from the large drug store next door.
The casino takes up most of the ground floor and has all the table games and slot machines you would expect. There were free lessons in blackjack, poker and craps for beginners and the casino had a good atmosphere. I liked that there were many tables with a $5 minimum bet when many strip casinos have a $10 minimum these days. For the less foolhardy there are plenty of nickel and quarter slots and video poker and blackjack machines.
Drinks are free for players, though it is expected to give the cocktail waitress a small tip. Even if you are only in Las Vegas for a few days it is worth joining the players club so you can earn points on all your gambling. The Monte Carlo is part of the MGM Mirage group, which operates most of the casinos on the strip, and the players’ club card works in all of their casinos. You can quickly earn enough points for a free meal or a discounted show ticket.
The hotel has a pool area which includes a kids pool, a wave pool and a lazy river. I didn’t think any of the pools were particularly large, given the size of the hotel, and was particularly disappointed by the lazy river (approx. 400 feet long it only takes a few minutes circumnavigate). Every available space is filled with sun loungers and by mid morning you’ll be hard pushed to find one available as the pool area gets incredibly busy. The overall effect was a cramped and crowded area that wasn’t very relaxing.
There is a large gym and spa on the first floor of the hotel. There were a wide range of treatments available but I didn’t use it as I objected to the cover charge of $22 a day for hotel guests, which is in addition to the cost of any treatments.
On the whole this is a good mid-priced hotel in an ideal location for exploring nearby casinos and the Las Vegas shows and nightlife. There are few extras included, and a rather greedy charge for internet access, but it is OK for a few nights – this is Las Vegas so you shouldn’t be spending that much time in your room!
