Head In The Clouds

Advantages: Brill for watching many species of humming birds&other birds.Nice&rural, lots of trails.
Disadvantages: You are very likely to get very wet. Not much to see except Hummingbirds

On our recent trip to Ecuador, South America we had a 2 day 1 night stay at the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve is less than 2 hours away from Quito but still deep in the forest. Our reason for visiting Bellavista was to see the many species of hummingbirds at the feeders. There are also many trails to walk. We arrived around midday after travelling from Quito. It was raining quite hard but we didn?t notice this when we saw all the hummingbirds at the syrup filled feeders around the main area of the lodge. There were also vivid blue Jays. We went to ?The Dome? which is a wooden building with 360 degree views from which you can see the rugged peaks of Pichincha and Catacachi in the distance. The Dome also had a restaurant and bar and library and accommodation above and cafe below. There was also a covered outside veranda with seating ...

Queen of the Forests

Advantages: Gorgeous location, so much to see and do
Disadvantages: None!

I've lived in the Forest of Dean my whole life (nearly 33 years) and completely taken it for granted! It's really only been in the last few years, since we had our son, that we have started to enjoy our home, with it's breathtaking scenery, abundance of family activities and friendly atmposphere, so I thought I would share it all with you. Brace yourselves, it's a long one! Here comes the history bit! The Forest of Dean was firstly recognised by the Saxons and covers 110 square kilometers or 27000 acres of woodland. It is one of the few remaining Royal forests left in England and has a rich history as a favourite hunting ground for many of our historical kings. The vast amount of woodland is home to many animals and birds, but Forest pride is mainly given to the beautiful fallow deer. There are about 400 here, of which ...

Review of The Forest of Dean

São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos

Advantages: Nicely restored tourist friendly old town
Disadvantages: The ladies hunt in packs

Salvador, in the state of Bahia, north east Brazil (or São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos as it was named in the past) was the first colonial capital city of Brazil and, although power shifted to Rio de Janeiro in the late eighteenth century, then to Brasilia in 1960, it retains much of it's past grandeur and colonial architecture. One of the main reasons to come here, however, is the wonderful mix of cultural influences that make the cuisine, music and lifestyle here so different even to other parts of Brazil. The population of over three million, consists mainly of people with African origins descended from slaves, although there have been many other strong influences through Salvador's history. Salvador is also famous for it's carnival and street parties. The final stop on my extensive two-week tour of Brazil was to Salvador ...
