Montmartre, Paris

Disadvantages: too many people

Monmartre is the famous square where artists have traditionally congregated. It is situated a few metres away from Sacre Cour and gives a delightful view of Paris. It is possible to spend hours walking around the square looking at the wonderful pieces of art on display, or if you do not fancy that then take a seat at one of the cafes and partake in a little bit of people watching. this is a fantastic little area of paris that seems oh so very french but is unfortunately teeming with tourists. nevertheless it is beautiful and has an exquisite atmosphere. there is a little square just down from sacre coeur and it is full of artists all trying to beckon you over to have a caricature of your pretty face done. it is qute expensive but they are on the whole very good. around the square are various musicians and bars offering expensive ... ...This hotel is great value for money. Situated very near to Montmartre it is an ideal base for seeing Paris on a budget. With good Metro access (Porte de Clignancourt) is only a couple of minutes walk, it is easy to get to from any of the main railway stations and easy to reach all of the attractions of Paris by Metro or bus. In the immediate area, there is a special bus service that will take you up the hill to Montmartre for a visit to the Sacre Coeur and the Place due Tertre where artists still gather. Then hop back on the bus to go to down the hill to the Place Pigalle, location of the Moulin Rouge. A Paris Visite travel card (available for 1 to 5 days) will give you travel on buses, Metro and trains across all of Paris. ...Sacré-Coeur, or 'Sacred Heart', is located at the top of Montmartre, or 'Martyr's Hill', which is the highest hill in Paris. It was built to commemorate the Communard rebels who were killed while resisting the invading Cossacks. They were hiding inside the chalk mines when the exits were blown up by the troops sent by the National Government at Versailles. Construction was started in 1876, and finally finished nearly 40 years later. How to Get There The nearest métro station is Abbesses. From there you can walk to the bottom of the hill. Take a good street map, as the signs are not very clear. If you don't have the energy to walk up the steps, then you can take the funiculaire (funicular railway) at the Place Saint-Pierre. Advantages: Excellent location and lovely view from the front bedrooms. Generally clean.

...For a basic, budget hotel in central Paris this hotel ticks all the boxes. It is generally clean, the entrance lobby is nicely laid out with an internet terminal and lots of local information, the breakfast is average, there are some books to borrow and a couple of vending machines. You get the idea. In terms of cost the best deals are to be found online and the price advertised in their window is much higher than you will pay by booking in advance. Breakfast is included and although rather basic its sufficient. Our room was clean and well maintained with a sink, bedside table, table and chair and a tv. Not much storage space though. We also had a big window and mini balcony which provided a lovely view of Sacre Coeur. However we needed the window open at night as it was the middle of summer and this meant it was very noisy...
