Montpellier is a great city - I spent a year studying there and loved it. It's a picturesque city with a pedestrianised centre. There is an average size shopping centre, a canary wharf equivalent called Antigone, loads of cinemas, and an opera house all in easy reach of the centre.
Attractions include lots of side streets with little shops and outside of the town, an olympic size swimming pool. There is bowling nearby and karting near the airport. There are lots of gyms catering to aerobics, martial arts and weightlifting. There are several concert venues. Bands who have played here include the Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Bjork and the Cranberries. Sting and The presidents of the USA played in Marseille, an hour or two away.
Avoid Peyrou (the park by the arc de triomphe)and the station after dark.(unless you are after drugs, a rent boy or a prostitute)
Bars: Place Jean Jaures, between the prefecture and place de la Comedie. Petit Negresco Les Arcades La Crypte: hard house, promotions on pints and tequila slammers London Tavern: Very nice, too expensive. Feria: Promotions on (watery) pints and sangria, full of foreign students Fitzpatricks behind the chamber of commerce, popular when there's sports on, none too cheap. Beer Academy Serves beer from all around the world, metres (12 halves) of beer cost 100FF. My personal recommendation Cargo: Live bands play very often, mostly blues or Rn'B, ie covers of James Brown, The Stones, Otis Reading etc. Docks Cafe (out of the centre) : Karaoke. Need I say more.
Clubs Cafe Leffe (Place Jean Jaures): bar with a small club at back. Psychodrome: Rock / indie stuff. Intersting decor: inflatable dolls in the cabinets that make up the bar, a strobe, laser and an Escher mural. Rockstore Plays a bit of everything from techno to rap to rock, also houses concerts, such as Anthrax, Therapy?, Pulp and Radiohead this year. Also has occasional free concerts. The home of Radio alligator 89.9FM which plays rock in the evenings. Bigger clubs outside the townon the way to Palavas: Picho Pingo - huge bar / club with massive murals and TV screen Notte, Nitro - Banging house / techno
Excursions Le Grau de Roi, Carnon, La Grande Motte etc: The nearest beach is at Palavas so you might as well go there as these are nothing special. Barcelona - only a few hours away, definitely worth a visit. Go through Figueras on the way to see the Dali museum and Andorra on the way back to get a load of incredibly cheap duty free - example bottle of Pastis 10FF.Not that you would want to drink it...
