Memorable Montreal!

Advantages: Historical city, lots to see and do, decent prices, fascinating history
Disadvantages: See history

...the east coast and Montreal. Montreal is a city I know quite well having been there three times before. I have friends there and so it's an obvious destination for me, perhaps less so for those with no connections there. It was Ms Larsbaby's first trip there, and we headed onwards to some other parts of the province of Quebec surrounding Montreal with my old friend Monsieur Montreal. Here is an account of our adventures.

'''ABOUT MONTREAL'''
...it's impossible to talk about Montreal without a history lesson to put the city today into context, and this could easily be a review in itself. But it's interesting to follow the eventful, turbulent history and it certainly goes a long way to explaining the mentality there, so bear with me (alternatively, skip past this section).

A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO VIST IN THE FALL

Advantages: Many beautiful sights with lots of shopping and cafes
Disadvantages: Only if you need to speak French

Montreal is a city that is definitely worth visiting. It has many historical sites, such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, Hotel de Ville, Place d'Armes-, Place Royale and my favorite, the Place Montreal Trust Mall. It is also home to McGill University. We arrived in Montreal via the St. Lawrence River. We had been told that Montreal had an underground mall and were expecting something dark and sinister, but found a beautiful, modern, multi-level mall ...
...The European atmosphere of Montreal was very interesting. Quaint little sidewalk cafes and french speaking owners. We had been told that the french speaking people of Quebec were very rude to outsiders, but we found this not to be true. They were polite, courteous and friendly and very eager to see that we had an enjoyable time. We took a tour of the city and saw where the Montreal Expos play and where the World Fair had been. If we wanted to gamble, ...

Montreal - Notre Dame Basilica

Advantages: Free entry, Interesting, highlt ornate.
Disadvantages: Not central

Montreal was the first city my wife and I visited on our tour of Eastern Canada. Our impression was of a large city with many very high rise office buildings, many, many shops and quite a lot of things to do. The evenings in Montreal can be spent looking around the hundreds of shops in the underground areas. There are many many miles of these shopping areas which can be explored. Another place to go is the Olympic Stadium which held the games of ...
...Notre Dame Basilica (a large church). From the outside it does not look as good. Once you step inside you become overwhelmed by its aura. There are plenty of gold artefacts. The stain-glass windows on one side of the building depict the history of Canada. Part of the building is known as the Wedding Chapel. This is reached by walking through the main part of the building. It is a smaller area. This is used for local weddings as the larger part would ...

Snowy and special

Advantages: Plenty to see and do.
Disadvantages: Very cold in Winter!

...the day I visited Downtown Montreal - great for shopping and sightseeing, Old Montreal - very touristy but beautiful, the port - again beautiful, Chinatown - for a delicious range of food and sights and we also found, tucked away, a music museum which was a small but fascinating glimpse of early music reproduction which displayed vintage gramphones, TVs, vinyl etc. Travelling within Montreal is cheap and easy - there is a flat fare of $2 on buses ...
...was regular and reliable even in such bad weather - the UK could learn something from that! Obviously the whole city has a multi-cultural feel due to the predominance of the French there and all around you are surrounded by evidence of this in shops, street signs and language, which adds to the whole experience. I hope to re-visit during the Summer months sometime to see more of what I missed as this city is a real treat. ...

A beautiful anniversary

Advantages: scenic, great historical sites, friendly people
Disadvantages: only that we ran out of money too fast

My boyfriend and I recently celebrated our one year anniversary in Montreal. We took a train, which took about 5 hours, that was probably the worst part. Taking a plane would have been much more comfortable. Our hotel was on a little side street off of Rue St. Catherine, which is their downtown area. It was fun to walk up and down, checking out their shops, which are similar to those in Ontario, where I am from, but also had the quaint charm of a ...
...English quite well. The Harvey's that we went to even had smoking, which was good for me since I smoke. (Ontario passed a law that you cannot smoke in any public building.) There were quite a few beggars, but they were friendly also, and wished you well a regardless if you gave them anything. They mostly kept to themselves. It was sad to see, but being from Toronto it was not unusual for me to see. Our hotel was gorgeous, Hotel du Fort, and a good ...

Montreal - a cosmopolitan city

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Montreal is an amazing city. It is also one of the most multi-cultural cities in North America. What makes Montreal so unique is the fact that it combines the traditions of North America along with those of Europe. In Montreal, you shouldn’t have any language problems as most of the people speak English as well as French. What you do in Montreal depends entirely on what you like and there really is something for virtually everybody. Whether it’s ...

Crash, bang, wallop

Advantages: Always one of the best races of the year with some unpredictable results
Disadvantages: Has seen some bad crashes - Panis in 1997 ring any bells?

but it was a poor street track and it lacked the razmatazz of other circuits. But the race began to become poular in 1978 when it moved to Northern Qubec and Montreal. Known as the Montreal circuit the track became famous for its fast straights and challenging bends. Ironically, the first race there went to home favourite Gilles Villeneuve father of son Jacques. Since then the Canadian GP has played host to some fantastic races and even a couple of championship deciders earning its place on the GP list for years to come. THE TRACK The Canadian track was launched in the F1 calendar in 1973 when home favourite Gilles Villeneuve won it. His son Jaques races this weekend for the ever improving BAR team. The track is one of the fastest on the calendar averaging around 150 mph. But despite having fast straights the corners are ...

Review of Formula 1 Circuit, Montreal, Canada

Great Race Guaranteed.

Advantages: Produces great races.
Disadvantages: Concrete walls.

The Canadian Grand Prix at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal always seems to produce exciting races. This circuit is only used once a year and that is for the Grand Prix, due to its combination of dedicated track and street circuit. Because of this the track is notoriously “dirty”, by which I mean that there is always a lot of dirt and grit on the surface which “cleans-up” as the weekend develops. The circuit has a combination of fast straights and slow tight corners, in particular the hairpin, which is definitely only a first gear corner. Setting the cars up with this combination and the track conditions puts a lot of emphasis on traction and grip rather than maximum speed, although speed is required for the 200 mph straights. The whole circuit is set on an island in the St Lawrence Seaway ...
