Knowing that it's a Monty Python musical, at least for the most part, sets the anticipation up a notch, as do all the quotes on the posters you see all over the Tube (assuming you're a Londoner) and on the internet and everywhere even if you're not. ?lovingly ripped off from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail.? Presented in easy-to-play arrangements for piano and voice, you?ll be on Broadway in no time!
Maybe. But 25 years ago all of the above would produce almost uncontrollable fits of hysterical laughter in student bars, sixth-form common rooms and among the gaggle of time-wasters who hang around office coffee machines. Richard Topping, in this exhaustive trawl through Monty Python's salad days, is particularly perceptive on the "Day-After-The Show-Was-Broadcast-Public-Recitals" that took place up and down the country. His contention that "this sense of mass involvement means there's a bit of Python in everyone, a shared comedic experience that we all refer to", is overwhelmingly vindicated. The book provides a thorough overview of every show, all the films and the stage shows as well as filling in the Oxbridge context and the early years when the team were writing and performing at the BBC. The lengthy biographies are informative and the whole thing comes together as a terrific celebration of a remarkable collection of talents. --Nick Wroe
Advantages: Act 1 is a laugh a minute Disadvantages: Slows down a little in Act 2
...there. Knowing that it's a Monty Python musical, at least for the most part, sets the anticipation up a notch, as do all the quotes on the posters you see all over the Tube (assuming you're a Londoner) and on the internet and everywhere even if you're not. If you've ever seen the film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", you have an idea of what to expect as well, and that seemingly assures you of a good time.
The problem with having this much anticipation ... ...with the theatre decorated in Monty Python style; the cartoon pictures of King Arthur matching those from the films and some amusing mock advertising slogans.
Even the concessions are in on the joke; next to fairly standard fare, such as programmes and t-shirts, you can buy killer rabbit puppets, stress cows, or a Black Knight doll with removable arms and legs and Spam. If one look at the price list of "Ye Olde Rippey Offey Shoppe", as it has been ...

...first West End performance of Monty Python's Spamalot. However, while I was in London, I saw a couple of posters advertising performances from 30th of September, two days earlier. Either way, I saw one of the earliest UK performances of this musical. It advertises itself as 'a new musical lovingly ripped off from the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. Certainly, if you've seen the movie, you'll see some stuff you recognise, but there's a lot ... ...and Graham Chapman. Monty Python were a (mostly) British comedy group that have produced a TV series, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and three movies: Holy Grail, Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. There was also And Now for Something Completely Different (but that's basically bits Flying Circus put together differently). Even people who think they know nothing about Monty Python would probably recognise some of the jokes. They are everywhere. ...

...being "lovingly ripped off" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail but I would definitely say you do not need to have seen the film to enjoy the show. If you have seen the film then there are some faithful renditions of parts of it, plus some new things to enjoy too. I have probably seen the film two or three times but not for years and not to the reciting all the lines type level of a lot of people who were there the night I saw the show. I found ... ...was written by the whole Monty Python team but the musical was the work of Eric Idle and John Du Prez, utilising parts of the film and creating new material. The show takes most of the good bits from The Holy Grail, such as the coconut shells, Prince Herbert, "We're Knights of the Round Table", the Knights Who Say Ni, the Frenchmen etc and adds in a substantial part for the Lady of the Lake, some bits from other Python ventures such as "Always Look ...
