The Moorings Hotel has been a fixture in Motherwell since I was very young, and generations have always enjoyed staying, eating and partying there.
The main house was custom built in 1891 for Archibald Colville, the son of one of Scotland's foremost steel dynasties, and have sympathetically upgraded and extended to provide all the comfort and style one would expect from a three star Hotel. Most recent addition is the new bar and lounge area a few years ago - and at this exact moment builders are on site adding decking for a 'beer garden'.
Food in the hotel is very well priced, but set menus sadly don't offer a great variety - mainly because the hotel restaurant can be quiet during the week. At weekends there is much more variety and the place is always busy. When I was there, we went in as a party of 9 for a friend's birthday and we paid about £20 each for three courses plus drinks. Garlic mushrooms are fantastic, lasagne again was wonderful (slightly big portion for me though!) and hot toffee pudding with ice cream was wonderful, but hard to squeeze in!
Unfortunately I cannot comment on the rooms themselves as I have not been in them for years - but they were well sized and nice to memory. Since then they extended the building and re-decorated - based on what I see in the main area I would imagine the quality of the rooms is the exact same.
Staff are well presented with their tartan skirts, and were all very friendly and courteous.
The Moorings is in a good location, and has plenty parking - I would recommend you have a car. As the other "review" (I find it hard to call it a review, but nevertheless...) mentioned that some attraction such as New Lanark were nowhere near. They are near but you need a car to enjoy it fully. From the Moorings you can head 5mins down the M74, and when you turn off you find yourself at the most beautiful part of the area - the Clyde side. You drive up fairly windy roads and look down and across the valleys and farmland, with several garden centres and cafe's. [Rosebank & Sandyholm are fantastic.] All signs post to Lanark so just follow the signs and enjoy the view!
M&D is 10mins in the car away, but if you are walking then you need to walk round the lake in the park which can be time consuming, but if it's a nice day most people opt to do that anyway. Motherwell train and bus station is 5mins up the road from the Moorings so if you want a bus/train to surrounding areas you can get trains every5mins to most local places including Glasgow - a bit longer for Edinburgh though.
In general it is one of the best places to stay if you are staying in the Motherwell - for price and quality. If you are planning to see the local sights then definitely hire a car. The hotel is in prime location but our Motherwell area just basically needs a car if you want to see things in a timely fashion without spending loads of time and money on buses!

It's very difficult to review a hotel whenyou haven't stayed there. There was more information about the restaurant, perhaps really this is more of a restaurant review - in any event you need more information on the detail, what it costs, what's on the menu, what you ate etc etc
