Rugged coastline that beckons the visitor and the hiker to come closer and enjoy lays stretched from the northern extremities of this county right down to the South. Rocks that have been washed by the ocean over centuries look out towards the sea and offer some of the best views in Brittany. Little walkways take the adventurous to places from bygone years, through walkways that take you to little coves that have been there since time began and that keep their charm, created by nature rather than man.

Morbihan has much to offer and does so with a generosity, and an abundance to please all. Its natural beauty is rich and plentiful, and for the more adventurous holidaymaker, there are the undiscovered places away from the crowd, places where you can feel alone with nature and safe with the world.

Its beauty extends from coastline to inland and the choice is ripe for the picking. From small market towns nestled in sheltered nooks and crannies, to large ports, largely unspoilt by commerce, Morbihan is a county that has something for everyone. The historically inclined tourist will find themselves pulled back into the days of the megaliths, huge standing stones that tower above the earth along the coastline at Carnac, geologists can seek out the lay lines of this magical place, and people who want entertainment will certainly find their rightful place too.

Morbihan stretches from La Faouet to Redon, and has large and small towns alike. Lorient is one of the largest towns and has a huge inter celtic music festival every year, which is astounding. Musicians come from all Celtic connected countries and participate in an extravaganza second to none, with music in the streets, concerts, and each little bar coming to life with impromptu musical moments.

The beaches of Carnac welcome the visitor who likes sandy beaches, which are safe, and Auray offers you a small fishing town with little street cafes that overlook the water. On a larger scale Vannes is also a port and here the winding streets take you back in time, whilst on an upbeat note, the shops are up to date and all the trappings of a large town within easy reach.

For those wishing to recuperate from illness, the thalassotherapie centres of Quiberon offer patients relaxation in natural healing waters, which are renowned worldwide and have been proven to be beneficial.

On an historic note, Morbihan offers a wealth of architectural marvel, and has wonderful churches; abbeys and you can step back in time and visit the Chateau at Josselin, or Pontivy and the old towns of Vannes and Pontivy.

To discover how life used to be in Brittany, there are villages that show you the life of yesteryear and Poule Fetan is one of the best, giving you demonstrations of living in another century and another time, when butter was made by hand, hand spinning was an everyday activity, and when the sheets were washed once a year whether they needed it or not, and laid out to dry in the fields.

For golfers, there is a good supply of 18 and 9 hole golf courses that take you through some of the most astounding countryside.

What I like about Morbihan is that it caters for people from all walks of life, that a day out does not have to be a costly affair and that it’s scenery offers the tourist such a wealth. For family holidays, Morbihan is great because there are so many picnic areas and safe seaside resorts, inland beaches that are safe from tidal water, and so many self catering holiday homes that families are made to feel welcome and do not have to spend a lot of money to enjoy their holiday.

Food is wonderful, and a five course meal can be had for as little as £5 a head, although for families, there are a host of self service restaurants that offer children’s menus at a really reasonable price.

All in all Morbihan has something for everyone, although I would recommend that the Summer holidays are the best here, perhaps stretching as far as Easter and as long as the end of September, whilst weather conditions both for travel and for the holiday are still reasonably clement.

Fares to Brittany are reasonable if you shop around and I would suggest to anyone booking ferries to try both the English and French Internet booking sites, as there are bargains out there to be had.

Throughout the Summer period, there are evening markets, Breton dancing events where the costumes are in abundance and the atmosphere wonderful. Every village holds a Kermesse which is a school fete and even these at local level can be a great day out, and the Fest Noz (Festival of the Night) and Fest Dai (Festival of the Day) are there to be enjoyed and consist of serious drinking and dancing.

Every year there is a festival of music week, and throughout Morbihan little villages come to life and because the countryside is so spread out, it is easy to miss what is going on and I would suggest a visit to a tourist office on the week of your visit so that you do not miss what is going on.

Wildlife lovers can find their niche here as well with natural reserves and coastline protected areas, which are great places to visit.

I hope I have tempted you.

Rachel
