In March 1993 I was asked to visit Moscow for a week to install and teach a young Russian lad to use an Auto CAD System (computer software for Design). I was only 19 years old and was travelling with my boss. I had heard a lot of jokes about Russia and the way I may have to live for a week but decided to give it a go as I would never have the opportunity again.
So out we flew with Aeroflot (again a lot of jokes about aeroflop etc etc) and had a very good flight on a small plane (2 seats one side and one seat on the other side of the plane) we had excellent food and the landing was as good as any other airline.
However, we had now landed in Moscow and were about to enter the Terminal. How dark and bland, all the uniformed staff looking at you with daggers and no one joked or smiled to save their lives. We had to go through Passport Control one by one with a line of people in a queue standing behind a line on the floor, nearly like being back at school (if you stand over the line you get sent to the back of the queue!!)
When you wait for your luggage there was nothing to do, nothing to see and it bloody cold on top of everything.
Once our bags came through I just wanted to make a dash for it but uh oh running looks bad so you have to take your time in case of being pivked up for running!!
Once we arrived at the hotel I found that I had left one bag (with all my spare shoes) at the airport so my boss and bodyguard had to go back to airport to find it, and to be fair it was there in the lost luggage department. To be fair this was good service.
Not really an experience that I want to go through ever again - give me TenerifeAirport any day.
Zdravstvujte
always wanted to go to Russia but that maybe has something to do with my ex-gf who is a moscowvite. At least I heard that about the airport from my teach myself russian book as it had loads about airports and your identity papers. The rest of russia can not be as bad as the airport cant it?
