Mostar - rebuilding bridges?

Advantages: Lots of culture and history, cheap, tasty food, kind people
Disadvantages: Those slippy footpaths!

...myself. The bridge was in Mostar which is now in the independent country of Bosnia and Herzegovina; more specifically, it is the regional capital of the province of Herzegovina in the south west of the country. There is a bridge there today but it is not the original; that was blown up by a Croatian rocket during the Bosnian war but after the war it was rebuilt, partly using the original materials which fell into the gorge below. In the summer of ...
...famous bridge.

Mostar was the first call on our brief tour of Bosnia; we came by bus from the Croatian coastal city of Split. As the crow flies the distance is not great but the mighty Dinaric Alps form a barrier between the two and this makes the journey duration much longer. We left Split at 6.00am which was not ideal but the journey took three and a half hours whereas the 9.00am coach journey took over five hours. Due to the geography ... more

Mostar's bridge over troubled waters

Advantages: Idyllic setting, fascinating history, friendly people
Disadvantages: Difficult to get to - limited range of facilities

Writing any article on Mostar is very difficult for me as every time I think of this city in Bosnia Herzegovina I feel very emotional. I have only visited twice but the whole city and people left a great heartfelt impression on me. I am not sure if it is because of what happened to the town in the Bosnian War, where families who had lived together side by side for centuries suddenly started killing each other, or whether it is the destruction of ...
...The city of Mostar is situated in the southern part of Bosnia Herzegovina spread over both banks of the Neretva River. Mountains are near to the left bank making this area steep. The right bank is much flatter and extended, and forms a small tributary called Radobolja. The city is roughly about 60km away from the Croatian coast and can be found by following the main M17 road. Getting there Trains from Ploce and Sarajevo will take you to Mostar. They ...

Blown Away in Bosnia

Advantages: A genuine eye-opener. Stunning views, friendly people.
Disadvantages: Watch out for the landmines. Hygiene and health and safety are a long way from what we're used to.

...sounding like Beer Tears. Mostar lies three hours inland by coach from the seductive tourist trap of Dubrovnik, across the border into mountainous Bosnia-Herzegovina. Both cities suffered devastating sieges a decade ago, but since then, their fates have been so different. Dubrovnik basks on the Adriatic coast, smug as only a chic, cosmopolitan tourist haven can be. After the war, the world fell over itself restoring the city to it's former glory. ...
...Inland, the people of Mostar have only recently been able to re-open their famous old bridge. A marvel of medieval ingenuity, it was senselessly blown up in November 1993. The country had a day of mourning - the bridge symbolised the harmony between two potentially volatile religions - the Catholics on one bank, the Muslims on the other. It took us a couple of days to pluck up the courage and decide on the trip to Bosnia. Guidebooks warn of the ...

Mostar, Bosnia Herzegovina

Advantages: So near to W. Europe's tourist hotspots, but so different
Disadvantages: Infrastructure harmed after a decade of turbulence

Mostar has a famously tragic history, which should never be forgotten, but you shouldn't let the shadow of the war in the 1990s from overpowering the fantastic experience you will have in Mostar. It is true that bomb-damaged houses dot the streets of the city, a constant reminder of the horrors which the Bosnian people suffered; but, in a symbolic juxtaposition, alongside the destruction the city seems to be redeveloping, modernising, awaking from ...
...river of the most startling shade of pure turquoise, quite unlike the many polluted waterways of Western Europe) has been rebuilt and is a fantastic attraction in itself. But the whole old city is a great experience. The architecture, the shops, the food, the faces of the local population all betray the fabled mix of Eastern European Orthodox Christianity and Ottoman Islam. Incidentally, the food (and especially the Bosnian coffee) is fantastic ...

Building a Bridge to my Heart

Advantages: Stunning architecture and setting, free, the handsome divers
Disadvantages: Dives are at random times; very slippy stones underfoot

Perhaps because I live in Gateshead, where seven of them within a stones throw of each span the River Tyne linking us with Newcastle, bridges seem to strike a chord with me. Not only do their designs and the materials they are constructed from put them in a defined time but their very being often represents some important moment from history. Often so much more than just a crossing place, bridges can arise from or be symbolic of more than is at first obvious. Since childhood I longed to see the Stari Most in the city of Mostar in what was then Yugoslavia, now Bosnia and Herzegovina. A family friend had been in the country and had brought back postcards of various sights in Yugoslavia, this being one of them. In particular I was fascinated by the divers, those brave ? some might say crazy ? young men who leap from the peak ...

WHERE IS THAT BOOZE, LETS GET PISSED

Advantages: entertainment & education
Disadvantages: not too many cheap places to stay but youth hostel and the camp

Theater], festival hosted theatres from Check Republic with "Anno Domini 2003", Anne Henderson’s "Blue Disco" from Holland and Lero Theater from Dubrovnik with 2 contemporary plays about exceptional life of Dubrovnik’s muse from 16 century Cvjeta Zuzuric, Mostar Youth Theater [from Bosnia and Herzegovina –ex Yu] with mythical contemporary dance presentation of "Labyrinth" and the fantastic idea of joining theatre with environmental problem of deserted army barrack and buildings in Croatia, that have no use, of two exceptional contemporary artists Vlasta Delimar and Milan Bozic. Lero Theatre is student theatre from beautiful and unique by its tradition and architecture, Dubrovnik. Traditionally contemporary crew of this theatre fulfills all expectations with 2 plays "Secret Garden" and "A Dialogue about beauty". Both plays ...
