Mostar has a famously tragic history, which should never be forgotten, but you shouldn't let the shadow of the war in the 1990s from overpowering the fantastic experience you will have in Mostar. It is true that bomb-damaged houses dot the streets of the city, a constant reminder of the horrors which the Bosnian people suffered; but, in a symbolic juxtaposition, alongside the destruction the city seems to be redeveloping, modernising, awaking from its war-induced slumber. The old bridge over the Neretva (a river of the most startling shade of pure turquoise, quite unlike the many polluted waterways of Western Europe) has been rebuilt and is a fantastic attraction in itself. But the whole old city is a great experience. The architecture, the shops, the food, the faces of the local population all betray the fabled mix of Eastern European Orthodox Christianity and Ottoman Islam. Incidentally, the food (and especially the Bosnian coffee) is fantastic - tasty, traditional and cheap. Go to Mostar, but don't expect a town basing its tourist economy entirely on the sufferings of the last decade. Bosnia has much to offer in spite of the war in Yugoslavia, not because of it.
You sure did make it sound worthy of a visit i'd love to visit Kosovo also is that a bordering country?. Crimps

Advantages: A genuine eye-opener. Stunning views, friendly people. Disadvantages: Watch out for the landmines. Hygiene and health and safety are a long way from what we're used to.
