I travel a lot across the country to visit relatives and when I recently became a mum baby facilities at motorway service became very important to me. On my first journey as a mum I stopped at a services (not Moto - Roadchef I think) and found the facilities to be very limited. However on my second journey I stopped at a Moto and I have to say from now on I will aim to stop at Moto services above all others. I was so impressed with the family/baby facilities.
All motos should provide free baby food, nappies and baby wipes, steribottles, bibs, bowls, spoons, use of microwave and bottle warmer. Now obviously not everything is on display or I'm sure the service would be abused as I've never seen any nappies or steribottles but I think you have to ask for them. I didn't know they provided free baby food but found out on my last trip when I arrived at the services to find I had forgotten to pack baby food (Bad Mummy!!), when I asked at the counter if they had any they replied they have it free!!! I was so impressed that they had some let alone it be free as this was an absolute lifesaver for me. They have two types of baby seat a reclining one (like you get on supermarket trollies for very young babies so you can put them down somewhere safe without having to lug a car seat around with you, and a normal wooden sit in highchair for older babies and kids.
They have a fenced off area for the kids to play in next to the restaurant tables (some locations have a seperate familes section where everything is located) and these "play pens" usually have a TV (sometimes on/sometimes off!) with kids cartoons on, colouring desk and fixed down toys. Some locations also have outside play areas too.
Also the baby change facilities are brilliant. They have aparent and child room with fixed baby change units along with sanitising sprays. In these are either private feeding areas or chairs for BF mums. Also some locations have parent and child joint toilets and a cubicle set up just for children in the main toilets with lower seats all decorated for kids!
Yes this review is focused on the parenting facilities but to be honest Moto is different from the others who just provide a pull down baby change in a disabled toilet and the odd highchair.
Obviously Moto as a company put a lot of thought into the facilities but it remains the job of the staff to make sure they are kept clean and well stocked. Sometimes they have run out of wipes, bowls, etc but if you ask they replenish them. However, I have never had cause to complain about the cleanliness of the baby change area or toilets in any of the locations I've stopped out. The toilets are cleaned every 60 minutes and a clock counter shows how long until the next clean. Some Motos also seem to have showers in the toilet sections as well.
The food for adults is usually a choice of overpriced Burger King or overpriced restaurant food (sometimes good, sometimes awful). The coffee they sell (Ritazza) is a nice coffee and not too badly priced. They always have a shop selling sweets, snacks, books, cd's, etc. However if you compare the cost of things to places like airports, etc the prices are similar.
The price of petrol at adjoining petrol stations is as always on the motorway services a higher price than you'd find in your local garage.
Personally I can live with the inflated food/drink prices as I rarely eat or drink more than a coffee or a sandwich. You can take your own drinks/snacks/sweets on a journey so you don't have to buy things there. However, if paying a bit more means they will continue to provide essential family orientated facitilies then I don't mind paying 20p more for a cup of coffee (I draw the line at £8 for dodgy fish and chips though!).
All in all if you are a new parent and need life made easier for you on a long journey try and stop at a Moto. Hopefully the one you stop at will be a clean, well stocked one!
Advantages: you know what to expect, somewhere to stop if you are tired Disadvantages: expensive food
...them- if you use the Moto baby feeding station you can get free Organix baby food, a free sterile bottle, microwaveable bowls, bibs, papmers nappies and spoons..
If you have children you can get childrens ' meals and there is a childrens fenced play area for children up to the age of 9 where you can lock them into the enclosure and sit outside. Burger King
Good food but at inflated price. I think this is unfair becasue it's a captive audience on ... ...I am not willing to pay £5 for a meal that is too big for me so I had a childrens meal for £2.69 - and it was easily enough for me. A regular sized burger, a small fries and a small drink. Had run out of toys so I sulked (not) .My boys had burgers and large fries. They do very good veggie burgers as well- and in the childrens meals, too..so we were very pleased! Impressed by the cleanliness and pleasant staff. TOILETS
The key facility for us. We ...

Advantages: No other alternative! Disadvantages: Just all round nasty
It was lashing down with rain when we pulled in at these services en route to Cambridge with a hungry 3 year old in tow. So I will give the cleaners the benefit of the doubt, as the entrance to the place was filthy - muddy footprints, and hazardous wet floors. Anyway we headed straight for the "restaurant" and breakfast. £7.99 for a plate of wilting toast, a couple of greasy sausages, an egg, some beans and some bacon wasn't the worst part! On top ... ...so for two people (we decided the little one would have to share ours!), you're talking nearly £20 before you've even touched the petrol pumps.
There was a display of supposedly healthy options for kids, but to be honest, they were all overpriced. And I've often wondered exactly what chemicals are used to keep apple slices white in the packet - surely apples go brown if left when you slice them?
Anyway, the only other option in these services to ...

Advantages: Great facilities for babies and kids Disadvantages: High prices
Had the pleasure of stopping at the Toddington services on the Southbound M1 on 18th May, 2004. It was about 1pm and the car park was around half full so no problems parking. Nice touch at the entrance to the building was the Pet Station with bowls of water and dog biscuits for the canine guests. Only guide dogs are allowed into the building but there was a small grassed area at the side where dogs could stretch their legs and do what dogs do best.
... ...speak for the gents but the ladies were spotless. I'd even be happy to take my granny in there. A lady was busy scrubbing the sinks while I was in there. Clean toilets, nice hot water, full soap dispensers and hand driers that worked. Thumbs up so far.
Usual concessions in the building: a small Thorntons, a Birthday card shop, the usual shop selling sweets, drinks, grab and go food and those strange gifts that they always seem to have in service ...

Quick review of Moto Motorway Service Stations
The problem with this service statiobn is where to park if you are in a large van . If you park in a car place you get clamped . if you park in a caravan place you get clamped , if you park in a HGV place geuss what you get clamped . The management don't want to know ,couldn't give a damm in fact . Ihasten to add I haven't been clamped but many friends and acciotes have . So if you drive anything other than a car AVOID like the plague . I personally will make a concious effort not to use any Moto services for this reason. ...

companies such as Granada, Welcome Break and Moto. Being chains, there is the advantage that you know what facilities and prices to expect, but they are also very impersonal and not always well maintained. People are collared on the motorway – ‘when you gotta go...’ and so can’t shop around for the best service. This means servicestations don’t always try to improve the quality of their facilities, and heck are they expensive.
However, there is hope. Deep in the heart of the Lake District- well, on the M6, between junctions 38 and 39, there lies Tebay Westmoreland Services, the UKs only family run, independent servicestation. According to their promotional material, it has also been voted the best servicestation in the UK. (OK, that’s not saying a huge amount!)
You can tell that it’s popular just ...
