If you want to get a train to the top, and buy a badge to say you did it at the peak visitor centre, youre in the wrong place.
Up and down in 3 days, as we did it, is a seriously bad idea, with altitude sickness and so on, the only possible way to climb is to take 6 steps forward and two back - there is no ammount of training that can prepare a couch potato to do this, you must be fit in body and mind, and then make your peace with whoever before you go get to the top.
On route to the summit of MountKenya there are a few lodges, one, about half way up has its own porter who will share his food at a price. The billets are basic, sometimes with a dirty matteress, but expect to pay a renal price for this.
The toilet facilities are usually a stinking \"long drop\" (hole in the floor) or simply using the squat method. For the men amongst us, forget shaving, for the ladies, forget the powder room.
The views are out of this world, and make every step of pain worth it. Expect to bloat up like a baloon on your journey from the change of pressure, and if you do take your boots off, dont expect to get them back on.
The best option is to hire a porter at the base to carry your bags, and to \"Keep you alive\" expect to feed him too. This guy will probably have a pair of flip flops on, but dont be led astray, you need as much sensible stuff as possible, but forget all this hi tech stuff, it wont help.
On your way down, dont do it too quickly, come down slowly allowing time to catch your breath, and take in the views.
Above all, dont be afraid to stop for the night to \"find yourself\".

Advantages: Ice on the equator is something that has to be seen to be believed Disadvantages: It's tough getting to the top, quite tricky in places and not for those with vertigo
