Mount Kenya, The Crazy British way

Advantages: Great views, lifetime experience
Disadvantages: Too high.

Going up the hill... If you want to get a train to the top, and buy a badge to say you did it at the peak visitor centre, youre in the wrong place. Up and down in 3 days, as we did it, is a seriously bad idea, with altitude sickness and so on, the only possible way to climb is to take 6 steps forward and two back - there is no ammount of training that can prepare a couch potato to do this, you must be fit in body and mind, and then make your peace with whoever before you go get to the top. On route to the summit of Mount Kenya there are a few lodges, one, about half way up has its own porter who will share his food at a price. The billets are basic, sometimes with a dirty matteress, but expect to pay a renal price for this. The toilet facilities are usually a stinking \"long drop\" (hole in the floor) or simply using ...

wildlife parks of Kenya

Advantages: beautiful scenes, waterfalls, black rhino
Disadvantages: a little difficult to get to

Aberdare National Park was made in 1950 to protect the forests of the Aberdare Mountains. It is a remote park, as it's hardly ever visited by travellers or safari companies. You must book in advance as you cannot take your own vehicles. The Park is located in the Central Highlands, west of Mount Kenya. You're able to see beautiful landscapes from high mountain peaks to valleys shaped like a V and bamboo forests. Accommodation There are 2 main types of accommodation. *Treetops* Treetops, tree house lodge, are one of Kenya's most famous hotels. This was where Princess Elizabeth was told that she had become Queen. So, as you can probably imagine, the prices at the hotel are quite expensive. *The Arks* The second hotel is The Arks, which is more reasonably priced. These are built in the shape of Noah's Ark. Also ...

Review of Aberdare National Park (Kenya)

Climb Mt Kenya !

Advantages: Fabulous views ,lots of wildlife, rewarding
Disadvantages: Hard work, primitive, fairly expensive

Mt Kenya national park is less famous than the Masai Mara or Kilimanjaro but has everything the adventurous spirit could want. The mountain itself is the main draw for most people but the park itself has plenty of wildlife and is much less crowded than the big game parks. The climb up and back takes 5-6 days and is pretty strenuous. Most nights there are huts to stay in but camping is necessary on some routes. Listening at night in your tent to a herd of buffalo grazing a few metres away is an unforgettable experience ! It is more or less compulsory to take a guide and porter - you won't want to cook your own food or put up your tent anyway. Amateur climbers can reach Lenana point, just short of 5,000 metres. ...
