Advantages: Beautiful Surroundings Disadvantages: Inconsistant and expensive
First impressions
High ceilings, elaborate plaster mouldings, impressive art combined with pale blue and white decoration and the smell of eastern spices make this restaurant an assault on the senses when you enter the door. You are met by a host of smartly dressed waiters in blue kilts and white shirts who politely and professional escort you to a table.

The first visit - December 2004
My husband and I dined at Mr. Singh's on the first weekend we spent with out our kids in 2004. My husband had heard of its good reputation so we took a taxi from our hotel to be warned by the taxi driver that we probably wouldn't get a table as we hadn't booked. Luckily they managed to squeeze us in. It was a Friday night two weeks before Christmas and the restaurant was packed with people booked in for works Christmas parties.
Food
They were only serving one set special Christmas meal. I have no idea what the different dishes were, but we were treated to a four course meal that was absolutely superb.
Service
There was one waitress serving four tables or parties and she did a great job, she was always close at hand but not overpoweringly so.
Cost
The evening was quite costly, £67 for two of us which broke down to £25 each for the set meal and £17 for drinks
Leaving
When we left the restaurant a queue of people waiting for tables (this happens a lot in the good restaurants in Glasgow at the weekend) had formed which went out the door and down the steps.
The Second Visit - April 2005
After our escape weekend on our own we returned to Glasgow with the children the following Easter. We took them to Mr. Singh's for a special night out and had a completely different experience.
Service
Once again we were met by the same smart waiters, but this time the restaurant was almost empty and there was only three waiters rather than the team of around a dozen there had been before. A drink order was taken and we were presented with menus. My husband ordered Phall (he like hot curry). The waiter warned him that this was extremely hot and advised he choose something else. I knew the restaurant was quite expensive so suggested that he do this rather than pay a lot of money for something he couldn't eat or wouldn't enjoy. He choose a Jalfrazi instead.
My youngest daughter ordered a child's portion of korma and rice
My oldest daughter and I each ordered chicken Tikka massala and rice.
We also ordered a round of poppadums.
The food arrived after around 30 minutes, the poppadums never appeared.
The food was obviously fresh, beautifully presented and piping hot.
On tasting however, the two Tikka massala were very spicy and the jalfrazi was very mild. My youngest daughter was served chips with her Korma instead of rice but the waiter was apologetic and changed it straight away.
Cost
The second visit cost £108 for three adult meals and one child's meal plus two rounds of drinks. The cost of the poppadums which did not appear was taken off the bill when my husband pointed it out to the waiter reducing the bill to £98
Overall
I have to say that we were disappointed with our second visit. I'm not sure if it was because our expectations were so high following such an excellent meal the first time around, but to be truthful for the cost of a meal in the restaurant expectations should be high.
Recommendation
It's a bit of a hard one to decide whether I'd recommend Mr. Singh's. When it was good it was superb, but personally I don't think I would risk another hundred pounds and take the chance on it again. I would go somewhere consistently good. When in Glasgow you are spoilt for choice on really great and much less expensive restaurants. I would say though that for the atmosphere decoration and on the chance that you go on a evening like our first visit you should try it once for the experience.
