Munich, the largest and most prosperous city in Bavaria is also its capital. To those unfamiliar with Germany, this city had international acclaim in 1972 with the Olympics, unfortunately it also resulted in an international act of terrorism by palestinians on the Israeli athletes. Thankfully Munich has managed to foreshadow this embarrassment in the World-Class city it is today.
I advise the best place to start your infiltration into Munich is at the Marienplatz, the centre of action in the Alstadt(old city) and the gravitation point of the city. Here it is almost impossible to not immerse yourself in the culture and history of the city. Taking in the Neues Rathaus, gothic town hall, where festivals and events are held throughout the year. Oktoberfest, my reason for going and indulging in Bavaria's finest beers and girls in pretzel bras(a must) runs from late sept. to early Oct. The basis of the festival is on the marriage of Bavarian Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese, and still today that atmosphere of unbridled revellry still exists.
Whilst beer prices aren't as low as you'd expect of Southern or even eastern European states, its still cheaper than in England. Accomodation can also be costly, if you want to stay around Marienplatz, hotel-pension am Markt is a reasonable place. Many bargains can be found from trawling through the internet and so i'd definetly recommend doing so.
For eating we managed to find this really friendly place with staff who actually consider you to be more than just a source of tourist revenue called Jinny's away from Marienplatz on Sendlinger Strasse.
There is alot to do in Munich, alot of culture to absorb, and quirks of the city that you can get from a short break there, however make sure you visit the tourist office as they have vouchers and special offers at the present time and can also end up giving you ideas worth following. (Jinny's!!_)
