Advantages: History, culture and good food Disadvantages: Industrial backdrop
...and a resplendent Musee Des Beaux Arts which is housed in a 17th century Abbey. Look out for the underground carparks that were co-designed by architects and artists, great fun.
Since 1985 Lyon has been desperately trying to improve self-image and reputation, so a lot of money has been invested into the lighting of the city. This has worked wonders and as you stroll along the banks of the Saone at night, looking for a nice restaurant, (of which there are many,) you will appreciate the effort....

Advantages: Great view of the city Disadvantages: Only get a good view on a clear day
...The basillica is located at the top of the hill overlooking Lyon. The building itself is attractive and worth a walk around but the real attraction is the view that is offered. On a clear day it really is lovely and you can see for miles, even getting a glimpse of the mountains in the distance. The bad thing is that on a misty day you can't even see down into the city so the trip isn't really worth it. Advantages: getting aroung the city Disadvantages: too much to see in a weekend

The shopping, for a start is formidable, from the huge mall at Lyon Part Dieu to the small shops and department stores in the city. However, the buildings, architecture and sights of the city are quite something else.
The massive squares in the city have to be the best in Europe. My favourite is in front of the Hotel de Ville. The building is magnificent and the square has decorative fountains and a huge fountain with four horses depicting the four great rivers of France. Adjacent to the hotel de ville is the Museum des Beaux arts with some very impressive pieces. This is just a short walk from the Opera House and also the old part of Lyon...
