Since 1985 Lyon has been desperately trying to improve self-image and reputation, so a lot of money has been invested into the lighting of the city. This has worked wonders and as you stroll along the banks of the Saone at night, looking for a nice restaurant, (of which there are many,) you will appreciate the effort....

Advantages: getting aroung the city Disadvantages: too much to see in a weekend
...I can't believe Lyon is not promoted more in the UK! We had the task of picking up a relative from the train station (Lyon Perrache) and so we decided to make a weekend of it. And what a weekend!
The shopping, for a start is formidable, from the huge mall at Lyon Part Dieu to the small shops and department stores in the city. However, the buildings, architecture and sights of the city are quite something else.
The massive squares in the city have to be the best in Europe. My favourite is in front of the Hotel de Ville. The building is magnificent and the square has decorative fountains and a huge fountain with four horses depicting the four great rivers of France. Adjacent to the hotel de ville is the Museum des Beaux arts with some very impressive pieces. This is just a short walk from the Opera House and also the old part of Lyon...

...for the pleasure of the Roman crouds (esp. Christians).
On the eastern side of the Rhône you will find the more recent neighborhoods of Lyon and also the great Parc de la Tête d'Or with it's zoo and rose garden. The Part-Dieu neighborhood houses one of Europe's largest shopping malls.
There are many museums: the fine arts museum, the contemporary arts museum, the Résistance and Deportation museum (WW2) to name a few.
Food
Lyon is a great place for eating. There are many specialties such as the Andouillette (porc intestins, it's better than it sounds), the quenelles, cochonailles (porc), cervelle de Canuts (sour cheese cream), bugnes (pastry) etc. etc. etc. The city is still perpetuating the tradition of the cullinary arts. You can't miss the bouchons lyonnais: the traditional restaurants.
