Advantages: Pretty city, some good attractions, good places to eat out, transport links Disadvantages: Everything comes to a standstill on Sundays
I have been living in Nantes for the past six months as part of my university Year Abroad, so I thought I might as well write a review on the city itself!
**General Info**
Nantes is situated in western France, on the Loire River. It's the 'prefecture' of the Pays de la Loire region, which is sort of like the 'capital' of the area. It's the eighth largest city in France, and is only a short journey away from the coast.
**The Town Centre**
The city centre of Nantes has a very French feel to it - there are cafes and bars with pavement tables everywhere; old cobbled roads and little narrow streets with traditional French architecture.
The main part of the city centre isn't very big at all; you could take a walking tour of it in one afternoon.
There are several squares, or "places" in the city centre, the biggest being ...
Advantages: Good food, good wine ,friendly people and great country. Disadvantages: Lack of french
overlooking the Loire. On our two visits so far it has been undergoing restoration work due to a landslide on the town facing façade, so we still haven't seen inside, though the grounds are worth a walk round if only for the views of the town.
It originates from the 14th century but it was in the 15th that it was made into a comfortable residence by Duke Rene d' Anjou. During its long history it has been the governor's house, a jail before the town purchased it in 1906 to restore and turn it into the tourist attraction it is today. The former royal apartments now house two museums - 'MuseedesArts Decoratifs' and Musee du Cheval'. The first houses European china and tapestries with the second located in the attic of the chateau being dedicated to equestrian pursuits where you are taken into a world of saddlery from across the world -all lovingly ...
Advantages: Lovely as towns go Disadvantages: It's in France!
come across in the evenings begging you to go and watch them!
3. Historical interest and Art
The Chateau in the centre of town is absolutely lovely, you can go inside to look at the exhibition or just have a picnic in the grounds when the sun is out. The Cathedral is equally stunning, it's free to look around, although I usually feel sorry for the beggar outside and give him the last of my change. The town itself also has many classicly french looking old buildings, you just have to wander around to find them.
There are a couple of art galleries in town, one of which is near the station, the other closer to town. You'll get information on the locations of anything you want to see from the FNAC (glorified tourist information), or from the hotel or campsite you stay in.
4. Pretty bits
The river Erdre runs through Nantes ...
