This museum is dedicated to the somewhat haunting Stasi secret police force that operated during the years of the GDR, 1949-1990.
The museum itself is free but any special exhibitions normally carry a small entrance fee of a few euros which is good value for money for what they contain. The location is easily accessible from the city centre, however, the museum itself is up a flight of stairs and not very disabled friendly. The museum is set in the old Stasi headquarters which adds a certain degree of authenticity.
It’s not a huge museum but the exhibits are informative and well maintained. A good knowledge of German is recommended as there are limited copies of the English guide and this does not translate all labels, merely the main ones. It’s also assumed that the guests will have background knowledge of what the Stasi was.
The specialist exhibitions are located in the building next door up several flights of stairs. They vary in content but are normally very informative and extensive. The museum also offers trips to a former Stasi bunker once a month which come highly recommended.
