Two years ago my daughter and I had a thoroughly enjoyable 3day/2 night stay in the fine city of Cardiff. We had a package at the elegant Angel Hotel in the city centre which included breakfast and an evening meal and our major problem was how to fit in visits to the many attractions in and around the Welsh capital. The hotel staff strongly rcommended we did not miss out on a visit to the Museum of Welsh Life.
The Museum is located in the 100 acre grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle,a late 16 th century manor house generously donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. It is only about 4 miles from the city centre and there was ample car parking on the day we visited. The area is very verdant and lush and it is quite difficult to imagine you are actually on the outskirts of a national capital.
There is a lot to see and do at this splendid folk museum, where they have reconstructed over 30 origiinal Welsh buildings on the site. There is a cute little bakery, a school, a grocers complete with all those wonderful metal plaques advertising the likes of Hovis bread and Woodbines, a Welsh Chapel, a blacksmith, a cooper, and even a working farm complete with sheep, pigs and cattle. There are staff of the Museum on hand if you have unresolved questions you would like to find an answer to. In the process of strolling through the park visiting the various exhibitions you do get an insight into how the Welsh folk lived in yesteryear. It is not surprising really that it is Wales' most popular heritage attraction.
The grounds themselves are delightful and perhaps we were lucky but the weather was superb and we must have spent four or five hours at St Fagans. It was so pleasurable strolling the grounds and lapping up all the sunshine. Of course by about 3 pm we were getting more than a bit peckish and so decided to get a lunch at the café/restaurant at the Museum. That frankly was the one disappointment of our trip. A number of the lunch time meals had finished by the time we went to the café and we ended up with some soggy fish and chips which we both felt was poor quality and over priced
Other than this blemish I would strongly recommend a visit to the Museum of Welsh Life, perhaps, take your own sandwiches with you and you will have a fun-filled day at this great outdoor attraction.
