The Museum of the Moving Image is located in South Bank and the nearest tube station is Waterloo or Embankment.

The Museum of the Moving Image is a must for everyone who loves film and television, and one of the best museums in London for keeping children entertained, especially on wet days. It`s full of hands-on exibits and the emphasis is firmly on participation. The staff, who act a guides, are trained actors who bring the story of the silver screen to life through narrative and improvised theatricals.

Others will put you through your paces as you audition for a place in the chorus of a Hollywood musical, help to make an animated cartoon or read the news on television. You can also star as the guest interviewee on a TV chat show and buy a video of your performance to take home.

If you are shy and do not fancy the glare of publicity or the sight of yourself on a TV monitor, you can always just wander among the maze of exhibits that cover the history of the moving image right back to the distant past of Javanese shadow theatre,as popular 4,000 years ago as today. You can wallow in nostalgia as you look at stills and clips from films and TV programmes.

The technical side of the subject is revealed through displays ranging from early cameras to modern satellite and microwave communications.
Ethical issuesare covered in sections devoted to censorship, the challenges making objective documentary programmes, the contribution of the avantgarde or such movements as German Expressionism to modern cinematic ideas and so on.

Other displays explore specific themes such as the films of Hithcock and Eisenstein, the Hollywood Dream Factory and film making in wartime. Most displays are enlivened by monitors that show newsreels, popular programmes, adverts, and classic film clips. You can also see a varied programme in the museum`s own big screen cinema, where the doorman and usherette, dressed in the costumes of the cimema`s heyday, swap quips which were first heard on the lips of Mae West and Humphrey Bogart.

Those who are left unsated by the museum`s riches should check what is on at the National Film Theatre next door.
