This is a newly built landmark in the downtown of Los Angeles. It is designed by the world famous architect Frank Gehry. This building is funded by Lillian Disney in memory of her late husband Walt Disney for his passion in music.
I visited this place last week. I was overwhemed by the appearance of the building. It is stainless steel free form shapes like the Bilbao museum in Spain, Frank Gehry's most famous piece of art. I highly recommend the audio tour to visitors. In the beginning, I was reluctant to use such a strange device. The content is about the design strategy of the music hall, interviews with the engineers, the story behind the building, materials, and all sorts of interesting information. The host, actor John Lithgow, step by step, guided you to every corners of the structure. He has a friendly voice and the way he narrated is warm and welcoming. The garden is a wonderful place where you can find a giant ceramic mosaic rose with running water fountain dedicated to Lillian Disney. This tour does not include the auditorium due to the busy performance schedule. There is a video showing clips of past performance and you can get a glimpse of what the music hall looks like inside.
I love this place, Frank is stretching the limits of the materials and making all the materials curve like the rhymn of the music. The wood panels are beautifully lined up. The carpet is especially designed for Lillian, it is vibrant in colors with lily patterns. It creates a Disney feel and blended very well with the interior. The stainless steel exterior matches very well with all the different style of stainless steel trash bins inside.
There is a small cafeteria in the ground floor serving simple meals.
I enjoy this tour a lot from a design student point of view. Only from the tour, I learn about the many well thought out details in the structure.
The audio tour is offered Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 3:00pm. The cost is $10, senior and student has discount. It takes around one and a half hour. Parking is $18 in the structure. But if you are joining the audio tour, they will give you validation and $8 back.
Please give me a rating if you found my experience is useful for your information! Because I need your support to continue the writing career. Many many thanks! ^!^
