On one of my many visits to Philadelphia I was walking up Chestnut street with my wife, when she stopped and said, "ooh, Now YOU will love this place". On one of my many visits to Philadelphia I was walking up Chestnut street with my wife, when she stopped and said, "ooh, Now YOU will love this place". And she was right;
It probably has something to do with my love of zombie movies, but I decided that it is my favorite museum of all time. It's all the things that could happen or go wrong with the human body; mostly the stuff that your mother would stop you in your tracks and tell you not to stare.
There is permanent collection and other temporary exhibits; one of these exhibits when I was there was all about infectious diseases. It was very imformative with graphic models and photography; ok so it may have put me off my lunch (a bit) but it taught me right there and then (what mom and dad always tried to drum into me) to wash your hands before you eat, and put your hand over your mouth when you cough as well as all the over social niceties.
The permanent collection is a little musty and crowded and does look a little like you have just walked into a laboratory that Peter Cushing uses during the week and Vincent price borrows at the weekend. There are exhibits like the largest colon, an array of skulls that had been damaged by various means, pictures of two-headed babies, and the soap woman.
You have to bare in mind that although it is a museum it is also a medical college, so it isnt a freak show and nothing is presented in an exploitive way. It is very informative and an honest look at the extremes of human health. But just because it is brutally real I wouldn't take my daughter (or any child for that matter) and some may find it too difficult to view.
However, if you have the stomach for it, it really is fascinating.
I'm not sure if it is open at the weekend and I can't remember the exact opening hours or anything like that. I do remember that it was $10 for each adult and $8 for children. (members of the American version of our Royal college of surgeons get in free).
A must for the morbidly fascinated and the macabre, but if you are not of that disposition then give it a miss. (Please don't take the kids)

Many museums, these days have bells and whistles. They have buttons to push, interactive displays with which to, well, interact and programmes galore to entice youngsters to learn. Other museums are resolutely Victorian, with dusty display cases and dusty displays. Tiny labels tell you the bare minimum about the exhibits (thus, handily, forcing you to buy the inevitable overpriced guide). However, a Victorian style museum needn't be musty or charmless. I'd seen this before with the MutterMuseum in Philadelphia, and, more recently, at the Pitt Rivers (billed on their website as a museum of anthropology and world archaeology) in Oxford - an utterly charming, yet slightly odd and eccentric burst of Victoriana in the middle of one of England's most beautiful cities.
