My next contact point was the Alexanderplatz with the television tower. The gigantic and primarily famous place may well have been beautiful once but has been left of a former gleam no longer much. "Alex" is still a traffic junction, from this one achieve everything in Berlin with a public transport practically effortlessly can, he is not beautiful, though. Skyscrapers stand from DDR times to all sides of the dreary, grey place after had become an expanse of rubble from the place in the second World War. The only sight which I could discover was the world clock made of steel, aluminium and e-mail from the year 1969.

Advantages: Germany's capital and most interesting city Disadvantages: a bit too large, distances too long
...part of the city but it's definitely still worth a visit.
Let's buy a day ticket or a ticket for the number of days you want to stay in Berlin for the S-Bahn (trains above ground), the U-Bahn (underground) and all buses in the ticket booth of the BVG in front of the station, there's someone you can talk to, *I* can't help you with the vending machines on the platforms, I'm an inlander, I speak the language, I've got an academic degree but I always ask for help when I need a ticket! Don't forget to stamp it before entering a train, the fine is 40€ if you do.

Advantages: History, culture, fun Disadvantages: none that I can think of
...into Reichsmark. The view from the TV Tower on the Alexanderplatz showed the true obscenity of the Wall - a great white worm sprawling around half the city. The underground map displayed in the East had large X's through the ghost stations closed because they were 'dangerously' close to the Wall. With reunification, these stations were reopened, and it is fascinating to observe their original styling.
Ten years on, and it is definitely the Eastern part of Berlin that is the happening place to be. The Old West Berlin looks tired and tawdry, whereas the up-and-coming East, now renamed Berlin Mitte, bristles with restored courtyards, galleries, cool bars and stylish restaurants. Potsdamer Platz, once eerily quiet with border mines, tank traps and rabbits on the grass, is now the largest building-site I Europe.
The transport infra...
