Advantages: Chocolates on the pillow! Disadvantages: Full of the traveling English on coach trips to the Xmas markets.
...for the price (the same money would barely have got us a small twin in a pension in the centre) and I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in the city.

Strengthening our desire to visit Cologne, had been the sight of this great cathedral from the A4 Autobahn each time that we had sped through the city en-route to Poland, twice a year every year since 2001. In October of last year at last the opportunity arose - we were in Lubeck for a friend's wedding and decided to combine this occasion with a three day visit to Cologne.
Whilst the outline of the Cathedral externally was familiar to me, the history and indeed treasures that lay within were not. Whatever religious views you may hold, your first impressions here?..and indeed your lasting memories are of awe, and on so many levels.
Photographs, guide books, the internet, you can research the lot before you arrive in Cologne and whatever your prior expectations of the Cathedral, nothing can really prepare you for the sheer scale...

...than ?10. On our last night we shunned the food of the markets and went for crepes in a café overlooking them instead. The cost was the same and we got to sit in comfort and warmth, smirking at those on the outside, hurrying through the drizzle.

W e went for 3 days which was just long enough - there's not all that much in Cologne, but the markets and cathedral make a trip worthwhile.
We travelled with Tui from Manchester and stayed at the Novotel. A taxi from the airport cost ?25 when rounded up for a tip. We walked everywhere in the city but there are trams and an underground available. There is also a fugly train.
We travelled out with 15kg luggage between us, and came back with 28kg. The difference was chocolate.
