Advantages: Opulent, near the Guggenheim, best in town Disadvantages: only that there's not more reason to go more often
The first time I stayed at the Carlton it was entirely accidental. I had flown from Madrid to Bilbao with a Spanish colleague probably 10 years ago and our flight was so late that the hotel where we had bookings had given our rooms away to someone else. It was late, we were tired and grouchy and they offered to find us 2 rooms somewhere else. The Carlton - being the best (and most expensive) hotel in town - had two rooms. We rolled up in the wee small hours of the morning, paid an arm, a leg and a few other body parts and spent no more than about 6 hours in our rooms before heading off in the morning.
HOWEVER, the Carlton was so beautiful and the rooms so lovely that I vowed that one-day I'd go back and that's exactly what I did.

Advantages: Cheap to fly Disadvantages: Not much stuff for children
Those of you, who know me, will know why I like Bilbao. For those of you that don?t know me I like Bilbao because of the Guggenheim. I spent most of the time looking out the window. When we arrived it was cold, windy and foggy. It was about 8 o?clock when we arrived, so I was expecting it to be cold. We stayed in a hotel along the river from the Guggenheim. From the hotel to the Guggenheim it was about a 5-minute walk. We dropped our stuff off at the hotel and went ...

Advantages: Idyllic location, great for hikers Disadvantages: Rooms are too warm and a little gloomy
(and had good AC) and the Villa Turistica de Priego is designed with the needs of ramblers in mind, rather than soft, lazy gits like me (my hill-walking days have long since taken a hike).
Speaking of hiking, this place is ideally situated for that particular pastime with any number of trails leading directly from the hotel. In fact, I wish I'd known about it when I did do a bit of hiking, it would've been perfect
Having said that, we really only wanted somewhere quiet, where we could lounge by the pool, have a nice meal, and perchance sink a few beers without breaking the bank. In that respect the hotel fulfilled all our requirements.
And although I found the room to be on the spartan side regarding creature comforts, it was very clean and well looked after.
So, if you're looking for some home comforts in a bright and airy room ...
