I've been to Amsterdam several times and have had different degrees of luck with the various hotels I've sampled there. The Nadia is the nicest hotel I've stayed in in the city. I booked it after reading good reviews on the internet. It is fantastic value for money, cosy, friendly and centrally located. It is very, very similar to the Hotel Di-Ann (which I have also reviewd on this website), but marginally more expensive. Like the Di-Ann, the steep stairs and tiny rooms mean this hotel is not suitable for young children or those with mobility difficulties.
The rooms are tiny (like cabins) but have everything you need. The staff are the nicest people you could hope to meet and nothing was to much trouble for them. As for the stairs.....they are overwhelming when you first open the front door and see the receptionist peering down from miles away up on the first floor but we were instructed to leave our bags in the hall and staff quickly brougt them up to our rooms. We had a short wait upon arrival before our rooms were ready but the staff escorted us to the dining room and offered us free hot or cold drinks and gave us hundreds of leaflets and guides to Amsterdam. During our stay they were happy to reccommend restaurants and arrange reservations for us if necessary.
We were in a room on the 3rd floor and were amazed at how much they had managed to cram into such a tiny space! It really is a wonderful example of space-saving! We had a double bed, table and 2 chairs, a tv, a fridge and plenty of storage space. The bathroom was tiny but had everything you need (ie, shower, loo, basin....) and we found the hotel generally to be very clean.
Breakfast is a simple continental spread - lovely raisin toast, croissants, cereals, cheese and great coffee! - and the dining room is really cosy like the rest of the hotel.
The location is fantastic - there are shops right outside the hotel and plenty of restaurants and bars in the immediate area (ranging from traditional Dutch pubs to more fashionable bars and restaurants). Anne Frank House and Westerkerk are right on your doorstep and the canal of Prinsengracht is a couple of minutes walk away and is lovely to wander along in nice weather. If coffeeshops are your thing, try La Tertulia on Prinsengracht. Even if you just want a drink, it's lovely in summer for a fruit juice or milkshake and cosy in winter for a hot chocolate and toastie!
The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from Dam Square (turn right on exiting the hotel and you will see Dam Palace - head in that direction). There are 2 good size supermarkets within a couple of minutes walk of the hotel, one if you turn left after leaving the hotel and cross one road....it's kind of hidden as has a very small doorway but is a proper full-size supermarket inside, and the other if you head towards Dam Square and turn off to the right just before you reach the Palace.
All in all, great value for money. We paid about £100 each for 4 nights bed and breakfast in the winter season and if you are prepared to face the incredibly steep stairs, and don't mind small rooms, you will love it here.
Will definitely be staying here again.
