UP POMPEII
Review of Pompeii by proxam

Advantages: Amazingly well preserved (like me)
Disadvantages: None

...the way to the forum...at Pompeii (see what I did?), we were stuck in a traffic jam whilst traveling along the autostrada from Naples. What could have caused this delay...that's right, a crash. So, to while away the tedium, we decided to count the cars without dents or scratches. There was ours, that was 1, and maybe another 2...maybe not. I wonder how much insurance costs in that part of the world (if anyone actually bothers). Luckily, we had set ...
...and teeth. Gruesome. Pompeii is big on the wow factor, whether you're interested in history or not and definitely one of the must-see sites in Italy, if not the world, and at only 10 euros admission, it's a real bargain too. Now for the drive back to Naples...shudder. ©proxam2008 ... Read review

Vesuvius Is Just Sleeping Not Dead
Review of Mount Vesuvius, Naples by debmercury

Advantages: Amazing Views-Well Worth The Climb
Disadvantages: It's A Fair Walk To The Top

Majestic and menacing, Vesuvius still dominates the Neapolitan landscape. This beautiful menace, overlooking the bay of Naples, last erupted in 1944. About 700,000 people live on the slopes, some in houses only a few hundred metres from the crater (property and rents are cheap here). Some 12,000 years after it first exploded into life, it looks peaceful enough-no white plume from the summit-but Vesuvius is just sleeping, not dead. From the Eighteenth ...
...climb up to the top in order to admire the panorama and look down into the crater. There is no better starting point to begin a journey through the history and culture of Campania. A journey which takes us back in time, as far as that 24th of August in 79A.D. when Vesuvius 'put on a show' with a devastating eruption which buried Pompeii, Herculanum and Oplontis. The rediscovery of the places that were victims of the wrath of the volcano came about ... Read review

Humpty Dumpty should fall from here
Review of Castle of the Egg (Castel dell'Ovo), Naples by lazza123

Advantages: Great historic place to visit
Disadvantages: None I can think of

...in and around Naples, this Castle is just one of those places. I've always had a love of castles and old house, the fact this was here seemed to good an opportunity to miss out on. *** What is it? *** The Castel Dell'Ovo is apparently the oldest castle in Naples, having had many guises throughout the years, it is now a fantastic place to visit. *** Where is it? *** The Castle sits on a promontory of land, a small islet, jutting out from ...
...there? *** The castle gets its name from way back when in history, there is supposedly an egg buried in the foundations, the poet Virgil, warned that if the egg ever broke a major catastrophe would engulf the city - read into that what you will! The castle in its present form dates from around the 16th century, but the site dates back to the ancient Greeks, who built the original harbour here. A Roman General had a villa built here, and used ... Read review

Pompeii: new and old
Review of Pompeii by crazyfishUK

Advantages: very interesting place full of information
Disadvantages: can be quite hard to find your way around

I visited Pompeii this summer after wanting to visit there for along time. It costs quite a lot of money to get in but you will get a discount if you show your British passport. Included in the price you get given a guide book and a map, which are very hepful in telling you about what each area of the town use to be. Your ticket also gives you entry in to Herculanium. I would recommend paying a bit more and getting an audio guide. We decided not ...
...hard to find. Pompeii itself is very easy to reach by transport. From most of the major cities you can get an organised tour and then get a tour around pompeii with a guide. You can also easily reach it from Naples on the Naples to Sorrento train, as we did, which is the cheaper option. The train itself is not the most plesent of trains, and it takes about 45 minutes but then endless beggers coming and singing and playing music to you will keep you ... Read review

Pompeii without the tour operators
Review of Pompeii by shay71

Advantages: Easy enough to see without a guide
Disadvantages: A lot to see in a morning

...notice. The train station in Pompeii is walking distant to the attraction and you don’t really need to know where you are going the market stall holders will direct you. There is a little bit of hassle from them to buy water, or have a meal etc, but if you just say no they are fine. We also decided not to bother with a guide, we just used the book you get with the admission fee (which incidentally is 11 euros each). It is quite busy at the entrance ...
...Museum or the museum within Pompeii itself. Even though a lot have been moved just seeing a small sample of the relics still gives you a feel for what actually happened and the impact of the volcano. I found it quite amazing to see how modern their lifestyles were. There were ruins of swimming baths, and places that were apparently cafes, take aways and pubs, and they had pedestrian crossings that were just big square rocks in the road that had ... Read review
