Filth, Crime, Ripoffs: Avoid Naples At All Costs!
Advantages: It makes Hell look like Beverly Hills Disadvantages: EVERYTHING
...knee-jerk pessimist, I happen to have spent well over two years in Naples and my experiences with the area and its inhabitants are of far greater depth than someone passing through on a tourbus. The best thing that can be done with Naples is to avoid it at all costs! ...

They knew how to build then
Advantages: Fantastic Historical Site Disadvantages: Infirm may not be able to visit
I work overseas quite a lot, and always try to take time to visit interesting places. This is one such place. I've worked in Italy many times, I have visited Pompeii, but I have always wanted to visit Herculaneum
*** What is it ? ***
Everybody (I hope) has heard of Pompeii, the Roman city which was devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Herculaneum was a Roman city & port, which was caught up and devastated by the same eruption, ... ...much better.
*** Where is it ?***
The best way I found to get there was by train. Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Central Station and go 8 stops to Ercolano Portico station. The train ticket cost 1.70 Euro for 120 minutes, so you will need two tickets, one for the return journey! To get to Herculaneum from the station follow the brown tourist signs straight down the hill. You can't miss the entrance, as it is a large doorway, in a shaded ...

I'll Happily go to Napoli
Advantages: Great City, lots to do Disadvantages: can be a bit dirty, very hot in summer
...impression that I had of Naples before I visited, but what I found was that it is a vibrant, happening really interesting city, some fantastic architecture, lots of great restaurants, which I would encourage everyone to visit if they get the chance. Oh and the drivers are not too careful!
*** Safety ***
Some people have said that Naples is a very dangerous city, but in my experience of walking around the city day and night, you just need to ... ...walked along the coast to Naples itself, I would say it is about 3 Km, but is totally flat.
*** Trips out ***
There are a lot of very nice places to visit away from Naples, I've just listed some that I have been to. Generally the train is the best mode of transport.
Pompeii
No trip to Naples is complete without visiting the ultimate Roman site - I didn't visit during this stay, as I have been before, I just had so many other things ...

NAPLES - ONE DAY IS QUITE ENOUGH!
Advantages: scenery, atmosphere very stereotypically italian, ice cream Disadvantages: dirty, smelly, difficult to navigate, roads dangerous
I visited Naples as part of a cruise holiday around popular mediterranean destinations. I had high hopes, the city, its architecture, its ambience. Above all I was desperate to taste authentic, italian pasta, naples style.
I was travelling alone for the duration of the one week cruise but was determined this should be an advantage rather than a pitfall. When the ship docked in Naples I went immediately ashore to enjoy the city and to find myself ... ...all the oldest buildings of Naples were crumbled and scattered down the hillside towards the sea. From my vantage point I could see all along the coast line and could easily pick out our My Travel cruise ship waiting in port.
Reaching the top of the hillside to appreciate the view was not an experience I would like to repeat! Motorbikes, cars and compact buses stream through the narrow, winding streets where tourists and locals wander. There are ...
