When we told our American on line friends that we were going on holiday to Nashville, Tennessee they all said "what the hell do you want to go to that Hick town for".
Well we went and cannot wait to return.
Nashville is the home of Country and Western music and literally everywhere you go you hear music. It is great. Everywhere we went people were friendly.
If you can, go places by bus and this will give you the chance to meet and talk to the locals.
All the shops/malls are on the outskirts of the town but the bus fares are one price whether you go one stop or to the end of the line. This way you not only see more but all the locals will chat to you and point out all the places of interest.
Shopping is great. Very cheap clothes and tools and computer items.
Walking at night was safe. Shops open late but not on Sunday morning - remember this is in the Bible belt.
We went in May and it was warm.
If you are choosing a hotel the system in the States is the higher the appartment/room the less you pay.
The food is mostly fast food and it was cheese with everything so if you like cheese you will be okay.
You will get some strange looks if you ask for sugar and milk with your coffee.
One last thing take your own teabags!!

Nashville is one of America's most misunderstood cities, and it's worth pointing out that it's not just the home of country music - since most of the major studios have a home there, it's output is more varied than you might think. And whilst it may be in the bible belt, it's liberal compared to East Tenn. or the deeper South (with the Smoky Mountains being well worth a visit, and if you're prepared for a six hour drive, Asheville in NC is a cute little place)

Advantages: Everything is within easy reach of downtown. There are many things to see and do. Disadvantages: Rush hour traffic is horrendous along the interstates due to road construction.
