I was lucky enough to go to the Bahamas on holiday in April 2008. In our party there were 3 children and 3 adults.
We arrived at the airport to be met by a limousine, we were driven to The Atlantis hotel on Paradise Island…wow what a place. We were able to have a good look round whilst in the Limo, the weather was beautiful and when we arrived at the Hotel, you could see why it was called Paradise!!
The hotel was enormous; it had lots of different sections. There is the Royal Towers, Imperial club, Coral Towers, Beach Towers, The Cove Atlantis, The Reef Atlantis, Harbour side Resort, and Special. We stayed in the Coral towers. Our room was large with 2 double beds in. It had a full stocked bar, which was checked daily and re-stocked…..beware, very expensive! There was a large mirrored wardrobe and plenty of drawer space. There was a large TV in the room, but to be honest, with so much to do at the hotel, we never put the TV on. Every day the maids left a fresh bottle of water free of charge, which was needed as there are no tea/coffee facilities in the room; I think
that is the only negative thing I could find in the whole hotel. The bathroom was very bright and clean, and very elegant. There was a bath, shower, sink and toilet. There were several white towels which were changed everyday if left in the bath. If they were hung up they were left for another day. There was a balcony, where you could sit and relax and watch people heading to one of the 11 swimming pools.
There is over 50,000 marine animals from over 200 species. There are tunnels you can walk through with sharks and lots of beautiful tropical fish. There are hundreds of stingrays, sharks, tropical fish, manta rays, Spiny lobster, bar jacks and lots more.
The Atlantis Hotel offers you everything you need for a fabulous holiday. It has 21 restaurants and 19 bars from fine dining, to cafes and buffet bars. Every where you go the standard of service is very high. The staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you.
There is a large casino, linking the towers together. There are 90 gaming tables which include blackjack, craps, roulette, mini-baccarat, Caribbean stud poker. There is also over a 1000 slot machines.
The Atlantis provides lots to do for children. There is several kids clubs where children from 3-12 can enjoy lots of supervised fun. Also there are water bikes, kayaking and snorkelling. There is also a movie theatre, where you can watch films everyday for free, and for the teenagers there is a disco, called Club Rush.
There is also a lot for adults to enjoy. There are shops to look at, but they are very expensive as they are mostly designer shops, which include Gucci, and Versace. There are plenty of Gift shops with the Atlantis logo, but again these aren't cheap! There is an 18 hole golf course where you can play and have spectacular views of the ocean. The Mandara spa offers lots of relaxing treatments from half a day to a full day of pampering. You can enjoy a massage, body treatment, facial, and aromatherapy. You can even have your teeth whitened while you are there!!!! $199 plus tax for a 40 minute session! There is also a salon where you can have your hair, nails and feet attended to. There is also a fitness centre for people who don't just want to sit by the pool relaxing. It has lots of things to offer, including 2 new studios where you can join in Pilate's classes, yoga and spinning. There is a 4 lane, 25 meter swimming pool. There are fitness programmes available and training sessions from qualified health and fitness professionals.
There is not much to offer in the evenings, either go to the cinema to watch a film or the one club, the Jokers Wild comedy club. A walk around the hotels and the grounds is a lovely way to relax after a fun packed day.
This year saw the opening of the Dolphin Cay. It consists of a 14 acre dolphin habitual, which is one of the biggest in the world. You can either play in shallow water of go into deeper water and swim with the dolphins. The Atlantis hotel is a recent billion dollar development. It is one of the largest water themed hotels in the world. It has over 20 million gallons of water which allows you to enjoy, a mile long river ride which comprises of rapids and wave surges. You sit in a large inner tube and let the water drive you…..beware it can go quite fast so watch the younger children. There are lots of slides. The Abyss is a 50 foot near vertical drop takes about 14 seconds and 200 foot long slide. The Falls, is a ride that pushes you up in the inner tube and then drops you 58 feet to ground level. The Serge starts at the Tower's top level and futures a camel back drop into the cavern ending in a flash flood.
If this is a bit fast for you, then you can enjoy the Lazy river which again, in the large inner tube, you gentle float round for quarter of a mile in a loop, helped along by a gentle currant. All guests must be at least 4 feet tall to go on any of the water rides.
Paradise Island Hotel offers you the choice of 2 beeches. The Paradise lagoon beech has snorkelling, and paddle boats in a protected area, so this is a lot safer for the kids. The Atlantis beech has miles and miles of white sand. The lounge chairs, beech towels and umbrellas are for the use of paradise island guests only. There is always staff around to help you get everything you need. You can always find something to do at one of the several swimming pools available at the Atlantis. All of the pools have beech chairs and towels for everyone, which are free. The pools are open from8am to 7pm every day and are manned by life guards. Any children under the age of 16 must be with an adult.
We got a river boat to Nassau, where there were a lot of shops and a large market. You can get your designer copy handbags, wallets, belts etc. The market burnt down earlier this year so the one that they were using was very small, cramped and hot. They were in the process of building a new market. It is well worth a look round though, I got lots of bargains. The only downside is the stall holders hound you to buy from them. Also you must haggle, as they seem to pluck a price out of the air when you ask how much something was.
We also went on a day trip on a high powered speed boat to a private island. This was a very small island where there were lots of iguanas. We got off the boat for half an hour to feed them. They came right over to you and took the food from you. We then went on to a tiny island where half a dozen people lived. They caught some massive fish, which they gutted in the shallow water. There were stingrays and sharks coming very close to the men and we were also able to feed the stingrays. We were told to stand in a line with a small piece of fish in our toes. The stingrays then swam over our feet and took the fish! What an experience!!
If you ever get the chance to go to the Bahamas, or Paradise Island hotel, you will not be disappointed. It is a beautiful place and a once in a lifetime place to visit. It was truly a fantastic place to go.
