The name Nassau conjures up images of swaying palms, white sand, a gentle surf and a light sweet breeze. Maybe it was once like that. Today though, the reality is more like crumbling concrete, loud cars, rude panhandlers, and the sweet smell of carbon monoxide. Admittedly, it isn't all like that. Paradise Island, and Cable Beach are both attractive resort areas kept in a fairly natural state. Actually, Paradise Island's Atlantis Resort is stunning - an oasis in the cold reality of modern Nassau. Why do people keep coming to the town? Mostly it's on cruise ships. The port is very large, and right at the centre of town, allowing many ships of any size to dock directly without tendering. This is a big advantage over most small ports, and Nassaua is also much cheaper to dock at for most ships. This leads to a daily influx of people to wander around the dirty Straw Market (cheap souvenirs and pushy merchants), and buy some duty free alcohol (a lot of good deals) and jewelery (a few good deals). But shopping in Nassau is a lot like shopping anywhere else - you can't even see the water or a single palm tree! I have visited Nassau dozens of times as a Crew Member on a cruise ship, and I can tell you that most of our guests rate it as the worst part of the cruise. Avoid it if you can. If you can't - visit Atlantis (take a taxi), and do a bit of shopping, then head back to the ship.

The next time you go to New Providence you should tour the rest of the island istead of just staying in Nassau which only makes up a small portion of the island.
