On this occasion I needed to rent a car during the last bank holiday weekend. As this was for a personal trip rather than business, I asked my girlfriend to sort me out a car, she ended up booking with National due to the special Bank Holiday rate of £53 from Friday 12noon until Monday 9am. Not bad eh?= VEHICLE COLLECTION =======On arrival at the branch I was greeted by friendly staff, one of the first things you will notice is the colour scheme for National....green,very green. The office, uniforms and logos all green. Mmm nice I don't think! As I was the only person collecting a vehicle at the time the service was quite swift except when it came to insurance then it slowed down. The price I was given included fully comp insurance but had an excess of £500. I was offered the option to waive this down to £75 by purchasing an extra insurance called Mastercover, this basically covered personal goods, personal accident insurance and waived £425 of the excess. A small tip when hiring a car always ask about insurance coverage which for car hire is as follows:
3rd Party Insurance - Covers damage to other road users, pedestrians,passengers and property.(except your own property)
Damige Waiver - Covers damage costs to hire car but normally have to pay first £100-£500 worth of damage Can be called CDW;Collision Damage Waiver
I declined the extra cover and so proceeded to carry on listening to the sales 'drool'
= THE VEHICLE =======After completing all formalities then it was on to inspect the vehicle. As it was quiet I was offered a choice of make and model frm my chosen category of car I had booked. On this occasion I had booked a Group C (Vauxhall Astra 1.4 or similar). Car hire firms normally group the same engine size cars together so for National it goes something like this:

I decided to choose a Peugeot 307 1.4 as I had not driven one of these yet, I was asked to check all over the car for damage, it had two scuff marks on the drivers side door,so the agent marked this down on the paperwork so I wuld not get charged for it on my return. The car itself was clean inside and out, with Radio 1 etc all tuned into the respective buttons on the radio.(Don't you just hate getting in a strange car and having to tune the radio in) The front seats were pushed right back so I could adjust the drivers side quite easily. The car was quite new as it had an 02 plate and had only just 1200 miles on the clock. They also give it to you with a full tank and I had to return it full. RAC breakdown cover is provided with the car and if they can't fix it they will relay you to the nearest National location for a new car regardless of time of day. = RETURNING THE VEHICLE =======
I thought returning the car would take ages but all the agent did was check the fuel and looked for new damage to which there was'nt anyway. This all took about 10 minutes which was pretty good.
= OVERALL VIEW =======Considering the cheap cost I was very impressed with the service and vehicle I recieved. I would certainley recommend others to use them. As for prices they are fairly competitive but extras such as ins. or young driver fees may push up rental costs.

...I then tried the National Car Rental website, the site was easy to use, prices clear to see, cars well described and very reasonably priced in comparison to competitors. The initial price quoted was £192 which I tried to book on-line. Unfortunately, for people carrier class and above, I had to phone a special number to check availability. The price was confirmed, the availability was confirmed and I asked for the booking to be made and an email sent ... ...training - Well done National Car Hire !, there are other companies out there who should follow your training methods and standards of customer care.
Needless to say, the EasyJet flight was delayed for departure for 3 hours at Glasgow Airport, and I was concerned that the office at Luton would not be open when we were re-scheduled to arrive. Once quick call to National Car Rental in the Luton Airport arrival hall, put my mind at ease.

They offer a very good booking service. We for example have an online booking system integrated in our Intranet - you simply fill in the data, get approval by your manager and usually 1 hour later, get the booking details emailed to you by National Car Rental.
One option they offer is very useful for me. You ... ...automatic with less than 5,000 miles. The car is always filled with petrol to the max and that's the way they expect it back.

The staff at this company are exceptional and have done everything from paying for my taxi fare to the rental location, to providing me with a lift home when I forgot my drivers licence and even providing me with a special account that suits usage of the cars.
Renting is always a pleasure, at regional locations they take the time to go through the rental procedure, answering any ... ...you and then accompany you on an inspection before you drive the car away. The process can range from about 10 minutes to 25 minutes and you even have the option of returning the car full or purchasing a tank of fuel from the rental location and returning the vehicle empty. The fuel is usually discounted at around 2pence per litre which might be beneficial if returning to an airport.
In my regular experience of driving away vehicles, I have no complaints, ...

Don't use National! I booked a car online for the weekend using the internet pre pay facility, the rate was £45. When I came to collect the car I was told that there was a rental extension charge, even though the pickup and drop off times were exactly the same as I requested online.
The rental extension charge pushed the price to nearly £70, so an increase of more than 50%. When I asked about this I was told that customer services were closed and ... ...car rental on the spot and now over 3 weeks later I am still trying to get my money back.
The whole thing felt like a cheap sales tactic to entice people with a cheap online rate then ramp up the price when you go to pick up. I expect many people are left with no choice but to pay the extra, luckily I was able to walk away. I wont be using them again and I would say be very careful when booking online. ...

I feel ripped off by auto europe !! They provide a low price for a carrental so you book them. Then, when you pick up the car (at National, LaGuardia) you have no choice but to immediately pay a full tank of gas at a "special" price which is more then double of the cost at the pump. I always return rentalcars with full tanks so I absolutely did not want this "option" which not even is an option because I had no choice but to pay. National say that I am obliged to pay it because of auto europe and auto europe say it is obliged by National. Another "fine feature" of this "option" is that you get no refund for any gas left in the tank when you return the car. In my case that was half a tank (because we had to drive very slowly because of snow) so I ended up paying $49.18 for half a tank of gas worth $12.
