Being a frequent renter I recently swapped my contract from Europcar (who are possibly the worst mainstream car rental provider) to National and Alamo Car Rental.
The staff at this company are exceptional and have done everything from paying for my taxi fare to the rental location, to providing me with a lift home when I forgot my drivers licence and even providing me with a special account that suits usage of the cars.
Renting is always a pleasure, at regional locations they take the time to go through the rental procedure, answering any questions you may have, explain the insurance options available to you and then accompany you on an inspection before you drive the car away. The process can range from about 10 minutes to 25 minutes and you even have the option of returning the car full or purchasing a tank of fuel from the rental location and returning the vehicle empty. The fuel is usually discounted at around 2pence per litre which might be beneficial if returning to an airport.
In my regular experience of driving away vehicles, I have no complaints, upgrades are given where appropriate and are usually very competitive or free, the cars are clean and of a high specification (the last car I drove was a VW Golf with Cruise Control!) and usually have little or no damage upon delivery.
Drivers who come to collect or drop off your vehicle are polite, well dressed and helpful. I would recommend this service as it costs approximately £12 and is great say if you are in Central London and don’t want to have to drive round the streets during rush hour. You are also able to pay the congestion charge at rental locations when renting a car in the congestion charging zone.
I usually drop off the car out of hours at Stansted Airport, and the staff there have never given me any problems. I leave the car in the Airport car park, drop the keys in the secure box at the airport, and then jump on a plane. I have never had any problems from the staff there and when I have rented from Stansted the staff have usually been helpful and courteous which is strange for an airport location!
I would recommend taking out the mastercover option at £10’s per day as this would avoid paying out a £500 deposit in the event of an accident.
There is one down side to all this though, sometimes you cant be sure to get a diesel if you want one, though it has never happened yet!

Ah, so Alamo and National are the same company - yes? That explains why I found it difficult to find Alamo when I flew to Hamburg and eventually found an Alamo 'desk' in the National office. Can't say that I found Alamo too impressive though - Kay
