My mission was to organize the transport of 6 people (4 adults and 2 children) from our rural Glasgow retreat to the Costwolds for a wedding via London to pick up another passenger without spending a second mortgage or requiring 2 days to sleep off the effects of a 7 hour drive ?
The second part was easy, no way I was going to driver the whole way so we booked a no frills EasyJet flight from Glasgow to Luton.
For the first part I thought I would go online and try to hire a 7 seaterpeople carrier. Tried all the big names - Herts, Avis, Europcar these companies were quoting funny money in excess of £600 pounds for a 4 day rental over the May Bank Holiday period.
I then tried the National Car Rental website, the site was easy to use, prices clear to see, cars well described and very reasonably priced in comparison to competitors. The initial price quoted was £192 which I tried to book on-line. Unfortunately, for people carrier class and above, I had to phone a special number to check availability.
The price was confirmed, the availability was confirmed and I asked for the booking to be made and an email sent to confirm with a booking reference - I had to leave credit card details but was assured that no payment was required or would be taken until the hire was complete, which turned out to be accurate and correct.
When the booking reference arrived by email, I responded from work and the operator noticed that the company I worked for was affiliated and although this was a personal hire, I was still entitled to an even better price, which subsequently turned out to be £178.64 . Despite this only being £15 or so, I was extremely grateful for the operators diligence and thought to myself that this pro-activeness just doesn't happen enough nowadays.
I put this down to focused, customer orientated training - Well done National Car Hire !, there are other companies out there who should follow your training methods and standards of customer care.
Needless to say, the EasyJet flight was delayed for departure for 3 hours at Glasgow Airport, and I was concerned that the office at Luton would not be open when we were re-scheduled to arrive. Once quick call to National Car Rental in the Luton Airport arrival hall, put my mind at ease.
When we did finally arrive in Luton, there was queue at the pick-up desk and despite my reservation having been made 2 months earlier, my details had to be re-confirmed. I was offered an Extended Liability Waiver at £14 per day, which I politely declined but was not pressed into accepting. We were then transported out by shuttle to the National Car Rental site. Another queue, this time to wait to pick up the keys and find out which parking bay my vehicle was parked. I was asked to check the vehicle condition myself and confirm the four scratches of varying size and location that already existed.
The people carrier itself was excellent, and was returned promptly 4 days later. I made sure I was present to check it in for the same four scratches that it left the site with and I would recommend everyone else does likewise.
Went back to the returns desk to hand over the keys and surprise, surprise, another queue. No option other than wait as I had to pay !
In summary National Car Rental provide an excellent value for money car rental, look out for their promotions as they are much cheaper than the competition but if you are in a hurry, look elsewhere, I came across queues at each desk I visited. The staff are polite and courteous but the impression I got was that they were understaffed and overworked, who knows maybe I just arrived at a busy time.
