My 10 Snapshots of the National Railway Museum

Advantages: free entrance, fantastic collection of railway related memorabilia.
Disadvantages: none that I could see.

The National Railway Museum (often shortened to NRM) in York has been open to the public since 1975, and now has become one of the largest and richest collections of railway related material in the world. It has won many awards including the European Museum of the Year Award in 2001. NRM is located in Leeman Road, next to York railway station. There are three main areas open to visitors: Great Hall, Station Hall and Outdoor Play Area. Historically the Great Hall was York?s North Motive Power Depot (an engine shed) which originally had 4 locomotive turntables. Addis Ababa as a travel destination

Advantages: Not touristy, inexpensive, interesting history, safe
Disadvantages: Poverty

was a replica, the original being kept safe elsewhere in the museum. The Holy Trinity church is worth visiting. It is large and magnificent with beautiful stained glass windows. Haile Selassie had it build to commerorate the end of the Italian occupation. His throne is still there and his remains were recently placed in a tomb that had been prepared for him there. Another place not to be missed is one of the biggest markets in Africa. It has everything that you would desire. But you have to be careful of people approaching you to be your guide for the day. We did finally accept the assistance of one to get the others off our back. As a guide he was well spoken, informative and not imposing. When we parted we gave him a few dollars for his trouble. There is lots more to see in and around Addis Ababa, too much to go into here ...

The National Museum and Gallery of Wales

Advantages: Plenty to see, great for a rainy day!
Disadvantages: Restaurant is not too good

--LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY-- The National Museum of Wales is an impressive building situated in the heart of Cardiff's beautiful Edwardian civic centre, which also houses the old Cardiff City Hall, the Law Courts, Cathays Park and Cardiff University. It is only about 2 minutes walk from Cardiff Castle and about a 15 minute walk from Cardiff Central Bus/Train Station. There are a number of multi storey car parks located in the vicinity of the Museum, although these can be quite expensive - you have been warned! Alternatively, the Council now has a voucher scheme running, whereby visitors can purchase parking vouchers from shops leading into the centre at a cost of £1.20 each, and you are then able to use designated spaces in the City Centre, providing anywhere from 1 to 8 hours parking (depending on how far you are prepared ...
