Imagine, if you will, the bald cypress trees reaching far above your head. Between the branches you see glimpses of the turkey vultures wheeling high against the clouds, the red-shouldered hawk soaring, the graceful flight of the swallow-tailed kites. If you are lucky you may catch sight of the Barred owl perched in the high branches or flashes of brilliant red as the male Northern Cardinal flits over the ground looking for food. By the pool overgrown with water lettuce you may catch the eye of an alligator or a Florida Redbelly Turtle. This is the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary – Collier County, Florida.
Corkscrew contains the oldest remaining stand of bald cypress trees in the state of Florida. Most cypress forests were cut down for timber in the 1940s and 50s. In the early 50s the National Audubon Society accepted responsibility for the management and preservation of the area. An elevated boardwalk was constructed that allowed visitors to enjoy the wildlife and the beauty of the swamp.
The Sanctuary is open daily all year round although hours vary. Indeed it is noteworthy that the experience differs in the wet and dry seasons. It is also pointed out that mosquitoes and no-see-ums tend not to present a problem to visitors. Recent admission charges were $6.50 for adults and $ 3 for children. It is sign posted from the I75 at junction 17 (Bonita Springs). The approach road is unprepossessing and leads through backwoods settlements. There is ample car parking and a sympathetic and informative gift shop.
Essential to the visit is the Companion Field Guide which gives a short account of the origins of the Sanctuary and also lists, with illustrations the flora and fauna that can be seen around the area. A visit essentially involves a walk around the two and a half mile boardwalk with short excursions to elevated viewing platforms. There are areas representative of Pine Flatwoods (slash pine trees killed by lightening strike do not rot and can remain standing for centuries), Wet Prairie, Cypress Forest and Marsh. Many trees exhibit coloured patches on their trunks from colonies of lichen. Many trees also host the curious Strangler Fig. There are also many examples of plants that live away from soil (the epiphytes) which can be found high in the upper branches – Tillandsia, Spanish Moss, Old Man’s Beard.
We saw many creatures and were able to identify most of them from the book. There are also rangers and friends of the Sanctuary on hand to point out sights that we may have otherwise missed. The mammals include Raccoon, Otter (we saw their spoor) grey squirrel and White-tailed deer. 26 species of bird of listed and illustrated. We learned the difference between a cormorant and an anhinga. There was also a Limpkin there that day – a species listed as of special concern in the state of Florida.
Alligators were in abundance sharing mud banks with the turtles. Although described we luckily did not come across the Diamond Backed Rattlesnake. We saw several stages in the development of the life cycle of the Southeastern Grasshopper. At the time of our visit, most were black and yellow juvenile nymphs. We were also acquainted with the two dominant butterflies: the Zebra Longwing and the Ruddy Daggerwing.
This is a ‘Must See’ place when visiting South West Florida. Appreciate the natural heritage of the planet and do your part to protect it. The Audubon Society and the Friends of Corkscrew Swamp are to be congratulated in their efforts both in local eco-system preservation and their attempts to bring such conservancy issues and sites to public attention.
Advantages: wild animals, whole day, lunch included Disadvantages: tiring day - especially in hot sun.
The Florida Everglades are a national park in which you can take a tour day-trip. The mini-bus picked us up from our hotel early morning and we set off into the wilderness. Before long we were told to look out the window for alligators - and we saw several. It was incredible how we could be in a beach resort (Marco Island on the East coast of Florida) in the morning and before long be in somewhere so wild and unpredictable. We took a river boat trip ... ...boat was followed by a pair of wild dolphins, jumping in and out of the water in chase. It was so lovely to watch these animals in their natural surroundings and to watch them perform under their own initiative. Much better than any aquariam park.
Our lunch consisted of alligator, frogs' legs, ostrich and other unitendifiable pieces of food. But we managed to eat it, and it really wasn't that bad!
The rest of the trip included visiting real American ...

THE KATHERINE GORGE AND NITMILUK NATIONALPARK
KATHERINE:
Katherine is a mining town in the Northern Territory of Australia there is not alot in the actual town but the reason for coming here is to experience the surrounding area and the Nitmiluk NationalPark.
FRUIT BATS:
We were in to the coach for 7.30 and off to Katherine Gorge for our gorge boat ride. The area where you board the boat is set up for picnics with BBQs and tables with chairs and there were nice clean toilets areas too which we made good use of. There was no reception area to speak of or any gift shop so you just had to wait around out in the open. We were entertained by the flying foxes hanging in the trees; every now and then one would fly across to another tree then fold himself up and hang from a branch again. They are really quite large bats but they d not seem ...
New Zealand's highest mountain is a set of three icy peaks, the highest being 3754m above sea level, dominant in the tussocky McKenzie Country in the South Island.
Mount Cook is the central point of the Aoraki Mount Cook NationalPark and it's also prominent in the Southern Alps, grand to view when you drive along the Tekapo to Twizel long straight roads, or alongside the hydro canal which takes water to the Upper Waitaki district network of lakes, canals, rivers and hydro dams.
Whether you fly over this natural wonderland in fixed wing or helicopter aircraft, or view it from a tour bus window, your own vehicle or a hired automobile you will never drive the length of the huge valley without stopping in awe and wonder.
You leave the main highway near Pukaki Dam, it is clearly signposted and once you drive alongside Lake ...
Advantages: Breathtaking scenery, Friendly, Helpful Rangers. Disadvantages: Weather unpredictable in Spring. Be Prepared!
We spent two days of our holiday in South West USA at Utah's Zion NationalPark and we couldn't have been more impressed with the parks facilities.
It cost $20 per vehicle to enter the park, the pass is good for 7 days, and as I said in my Grand Canyon op, it could work out cheaper to buy a 12 month annual pass if you're planning to visit more than a couple of NationalParks. Once inside there is a large car park and brand new visitors centre with plenty of information and facilities.
Outside the visitors centre is the shuttle bus stop. The buses are free and run every 7 minutes. A round trip on the bus takes 90 minutes and there are plenty of places to get off and hike or site see and the next bus wont be far behind when you're ready to move on. The buses run from 5.30am to 11pm.
At the Zion Lodge (about 5 stops in ...
