The website says they are: "Britain's only scheduled coach network which reaches around 1000 destinations in England, Scotland and Wales, carries more than 16 million passengers each year and provides express 'Shuttle' services between major centres of population in Britain. "
To book online you can use their planner to look for the best journey and prices for your needs. There are four main option tabs : Uk, Airports, Europe and Ireland. Then you put in your 'from', 'to', 'departure date' and 'return date' options. You wil then generate at least one option (hopefully), which you can accept or not! This can be quite time consuming unless you know exactly what you want. * I personally found this quite helpful, although I decided to not to book online.*
Prices obviously vary depending on your journey, but thankfully not on the time of year!
History The National Express Company goes back well over a hundred years and are well known in the UK. They adopted the name 'National Express' in 1974.
Eurolines is the International Company for National Express. These are for the European journeys. Recently a new business called 'Airlinks' has been set up to look after 'on-airport' services at Heathrow and Gatwick.

My daughter and I were looking forward to our holiday in France. I decided we would have to go by coach as I could not afford the flights, August being the most expensive time of the year to fly.
I booked the tickets quite easily in our local bus station after researching online the cheapest journey. My friends had given us a choice of places where they could pick us up from. National Express was the obvious choice. For some reason though, we had to go via London even tho' it meant we were going back on ourselves. But as it was the cheapest option I went ahead.
You should've been with me on my way to France, or perhaps not!! We (my 12 yr. old daughter & myself) were going to stay with some friends who had emigrated there a couple of years ago. First of all, the coach from Maidstone to London was late 'cos it broke down. So, instead of leaving Maidstone at 3:15pm it was about 4:45pm. We should've arrived at London at 4:40pm but instead we arrived at 6:15pm.
My next coach had been due to leave at 6pm, but the driver of our first coach rang ahead and listed some coaches that myself and others needed to catch and asked for them to be held for us. But when we arrived at London the message had not got to the correct department and so the coach had gone without us! We then found out that there would not be another coach going to the same place for another couple of days. By this time Zoe (my daughter) and I were in tears, thinking we were gonna have to go home. But I insisted that they find us some way of getting to France 'today' as planned. After all it was their fault.
Apparently (or so I was told) when I booked the tickets, because the Maidstone to London journey was booked as a separate journey they were not automatically linked. But, this was done on the advice of National Express by phone to the booking office while I was booking the tickets. Anyway, eventually they said we could go to Paris and arrange further transport from there by train.( We should have been going to Tours and changing coaches there for the coach to Limoge.)
By this time it was about 8pm and the next coach to Paris was at 8:30pm. So, they gave us our tickets after checking our passports and phoned Paris telling them the situation, advising them that they will be sending a fax to confirm permission to change our transport arrangements for us. The gentleman who dealt with us was very polite, but rushed off his feet, so had to keep leaving us to deal with other customers.
We just about made the coach. It was due to arrive in Paris at 7am next day, but arrived an hour early. When we got there the fax had not arrived and they could not find any message from London and no-one knew anything about us or our situation. The man in London had even written on our original ticket about the change and stamped it with the Eurolines stamp But that was not enough. We had to wait for the fax. They said if the fax did not arrive then they would have to wait 'til the London office opened at 8am, 9am France time. Then we were told that the department they needed to speak to didn't open 'til 10am France time! Still we waited.
Of course I had to let my friends in France know what was happening 'cos they were supposed to be picking us up at Limoge at 9:45am that morning. So, I had been keeping in contact with them, updating them. Eventually around about 1pm the long awaited fax (a new one) arrived. By this time it was too late for my friends to pick us up at Limoge, so I asked if we could have transport to Angouleme instead as it is much nearer to where we were staying.
They finally arranged for a paid taxi to the Paris train station for a train to Angouleme. They gave me the money and a print out of the train I needed, so I could get the ticket myself (Bearing mind I hardly speak a word of french)! It was fairly easy getting a ticket, but it was a bit scary finding the correct train and carriage.
(You are allocated numbered seats in a particular carriage. The train (a TGV, fast train) was about 22 carriages long, with the first half being 1st class and the rest 2nd class. We were of course 2nd class, our carriage was No.10 of 11!!!! Thankfully there were some kind people who spoke both english and french who helped me find our seats and assured us we were on the correct train. We finally arrived in Angouleme at approx 4:10pm. This was approx 6 and a half hours late. So, we'd lost about half a day.
Our journey home was much less eventful and quite straightforward. We started the journey from Limoge. But...the longest part of the journey was from Tours, where we changed coaches (10:15pm), to London (arriving 8:25am next morning). This was a very uncomfortable coach with not much leg room, considering we were supposed to be able to sleep on it On top of that the drivers were Spanish with little or no English and told us (by miming) that we were not allowed to eat or drink on the coach. There were no refreshment stops on this journey,so the only time we could get off was when we had our passports and bags checked and when we were on the Eurotunnel train!
At this point I have to say that this is not typical of my experience of using National Express Coaches. But, then I have not travelled as far with them before.
When I arrived home needless to say I e-mailed National Express with details of the above problems. They replied after a short while requesting my original tickets, which I sent them by recorded delivery after scanning them onto my computer for my records. They managed to lose these even tho' they had been signed for. It had not been logged into their records book, for which they supposedly keep a track of any incoming recorded delivery post. (You can check online via the P.O. site to see if your post has been delivered and signed for.)
Thankfully on speaking to the manageress of Customer Services she decided to issue me a cheque for refund of my outward journey, plus £20 each compensation money for myself and my daughter.
As for the drivers attitude on the way home, this is being investigated as this is not their usual practice. (Not stopping for refreshments and not allowing passengers to eat or drink on the bus.)
I ask myself 'Would I use National Express again'? Well, certainly not for any long distance journeys that's for sure.

I must admit that i found their Eurolines service when i used them to go over to Ireland a little disappointing... Not oo bad in the UK though - i even arrived 40 mins early when i last went up north just before Christmas! Just hoping my next foray is as good lol Sounds like you had a nightmare journey and an awful driver... Sarah xx
