Our trip to the NHM
I will tell you something about the Natural History Museum in London today, which we visited last year. I hope you enjoy reading the article.
It is Tuesday 14th of October, 10.30 o´clock in the morning, our third day in London. After a few discussions about how to spend our free time in the morning, we decide to go to the Natural History Museum, because it´s no long way to get there, it is free and we find no better choice..
We, that´s a group of five people of our class: Svenja, Prisca, Kathrin, Janine and Natascha. We first think that this museum is called National History Museum and expect that it is about the history of Britain. We are very surprised when we recognize that the museum ist about NATURE and not about the British NATION!
After leaving the South Kensington underground station we immediately see the building of the museum. It looks like a cathedral and is very tall. Outside there are images which show different places on earth like the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reaf from the bird´seye view. There is also a big map of the world on the ground and you can take off your shoes and walk
on this map and so "experience" the whole world in a few steps. Around the map there are some of the landscape images in braille, so that blind people have the chance to "see" the world, too. This exhibition is very impressive because we could see different faces of the world from a new perspective.
We go through the entrance and are now in the entry-hall where a big dinosaur-skeleton welcomes us. It is fascinating because of its unbelievable size. In the museum, our group splits in two different groups and we discover the museum with Kathrin. Big stairs in front of us lead us to the first exhibition about monkeys. There we´ve got the opportunity to play a computer game and test our knowledge of the behaviour of monkeys. There are also skulls of monkeys and of the ancestors of human beings. It´s funny to watch some films about this subject, but after a few minutes we go downstairs and on the right there is the next exhibition.
We´re very happy when we see, that it is about dinosaurs, because we like these "monsters". We walk over a high-level walkway which brings us eye to eye with some dinosaur-skeletons which are fixed on the ceiling. We also see some live-size robotic dinosaur models (like the ones we know from the famous Spielberg movie "Jurassic Park") with sound effects and with a bloody mouth. We get afraid and Janine is so frightend that she drops her camera-case down the high-level walkway on the head of friendly tourist. First he looks very surprised but then he throws it up to Janine with a friendly smile on his face. On our walk through the "world of dinosaurs" we see some art students who are drawing pictures of the dinosaurs bones. Me meet these students also in the other exibitions and we are impressed by their great talent.
Our way through the Natural History Museum leads us now into the life galleries. There is a exhibiton about human biology. The process of reproduction is shown in detail, the development of a fetus to adult person is described (there is a huge plastic model an embryo in the female body); we get to know how a baby discovers its environment with its different senses and important processes in the human body are explained. It is very interesting because the information is suported by computer games, tests (for example we could train our memory) and examples. Most of the information was the same stuff like in the biology lessons at school but here in the museum it was not so theoretical like in school. In this exhibition we meet a lot of british school children in their typical uniforms who are trying to understand the "act of making" ;-) Another exhibition we vistit in the life galleries is about mammals. In a huge hall there is a bluewhale suspended from the ceiling and we wouldn´t believe how big this animal really is if we hadn´t seen it with our own eyes. There are also other mammals for example a sheep, an elephant, many whales and dolphins, a giraffe and many more. Animals related to each other are exhibited in vitrines (photo left) and it is interesting to see how similar they look although they life in different environments. That has something to do with the evolution.
Unfortunately we have to quit the museum, because we have to meet the class in the Globe Theatre. It is a pity that we have to go now, for we haven´t got the chance to look at everything in the Natural History Museum. Because of that we decide to visit the museum again on our last day, Thursday the 16th of October, our last day in London L This time we chose another entrance on the backside of the building and first we go into the souvenir shop (like real tourists do :)) and buy some postcards. On this day we recognize how big the building really is! In this part of the building there are the earth galleries which we doesn´t notice during our first visit.
We get to the exhibition about the phenomenons of the nature like earthquakes, thunderstorms and so on by an escalator which guides us into the "middle of the earth" . Before we leave the escalator, we take a look at the inside of the earth which looks like the sky in the night with many stars. This exhibition is also interesting like the rest of the museum, but on this day we are so tired that we don´t stay very long.
All in all we are happy that the visited this museum. It was a great experience, because we had never seen a museum like this before. Unfortunately we hadn´t enough time and power to visit every exhibition because the museum is so huge and there are so many information. In our opinion it is surprising that a museum like the NHM is for free, because it is so modern (e.g. the computergames) and is so informative.
We hope that you liked our article and for further detailed facts about the Natural History Museum we recommend you to look at the official homepage of the museum: www.nhm.ac.uk In conclusion we can say that everyone how hasn´t visit the museum while we were in London missed something because it was awesome.
Greetings, Natascha
