Are you stuck for something to do in the school holidays with your children? Do you have little money? Well, if so this is the place for you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Museum The museum is set in a lovely victorian building, which even has animals carved in the stonework. The museum has two entrances one has steps (Life Galleries entrance, Cromwell Road) and the other is more suitable for wheelchairs/ buggies,(Earth Galleries, Exhibition Road).
Their is many areas to explore in the museum, don't expect to see it all unless your very fit. A good idea is to get a map this will give you an idea of what is in each area, choose the best first so you won't be disappointed as time can fly by here.
------------------ Life Galleries ------------------ This Area is all about life including our selves and animals
past and present. The major highlight of this area is the dinosaur section, my children love this area. here is a list of all areas in the life galleries:
Fishes, Amphibians and Reptiles Marine Invertebrates Dinosaurs Human Biology Mammals Mammals and Blue Whale Fossil Marine Reptiles Fossils from Britain Ecology Creepy Crawlies Birds Lasting Impressions Our Place in Evolution Minerals Meteorites Primates Plant Power
The areas really bring to life the animals by showing you what they look like as well as explaining where they come from and live. You can also find out about animals which once lived and why they are no longer around.
-------------------- Darwin Centre -------------------- The Two areas of the Darwin Centre are:
Darwin Centre Live (This area is closed at the moment but is where you can Discover more about the work of the Museum's curators and researchers )
Darwin Centre Explore (Put on your lab coat and join the Explore tour, with a chance to see some of the millions of fascinating specimens preserved in our storerooms.) You need to book this tour even though its free.
-------------------- Earth Galleries --------------------- This Gallery is about the world around us, learn about volcanoes, earthquakes and much much more. Areas in the Earth Gallery are:
Visions of Earth (This is basically an introduction area of the Earth Gallery but stands out with a giant globe which you can go up into by esculators).
Earth Today and Tomorrow (This area is about the balance between human needs and the effect on the environment. many hands-on things to do in this area to help us get a better understanding)
From the Beginning (How did the world begin? Well find out here. You will also discover how other planets evolved).
Earth's Treasury (Here you will be stunned with the many different types of minerals, gems and rocks, i really enjoyed this area as we had a lovely lady explain more on the items we picked out).
The Power Within (This area is about the powers of Earthquakes and volcanoes, you can also experince an earthquake in this area.)
Restless Surface (The weather, sea, climate has an on going effect on the land, see here how things change and what people are doing to help prevent the eroding of our land).
As a family each time we visit London we have to go and see the dinosaurs, what an experience. We have on occasions spent all day here and my children aged 8 and 11 years have never been bored of it. There is plenty of hands on things for the children to do which are fun but educational at the same time. The children love The creepy crawly but for me it sent shivers down my spine, the live ants nest is interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Opening times Monday to Saturday 10:00 - 17:50 Sunday 11:00 - 17:50 Last admission 17:30
Admission Price: FREE (But they do have some extra temporary displays which can have a small fee) but to be honest we don't have time for these, too busy with the rest of the museum:) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whats on now:
DIG THOSE DINOSAURS FROM 14TH JULY TO 3RD SEPTEMBER Join the summer of dinosaur fun and go prehistoric for the holidays. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Address and getting there:
Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, UK. Within walking distance of South Kensington station on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines. By bus Routes 14, 49, 70, 74, 345, 360, 414 and C1 stop near us. Some tour buses also pass nearby.
I would not advise going by car here as parking is very difficult and expensive.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Extra Helpful info:
The Cafe is very expensive so i would suggest you pop out for lunch and come back. I brought 4 drinks and 2 small packs of biscuits for approx. £15 never again.
Due to heighten security your bags will be checked on entering the building, no sharp items are allowed. I have only had this done once and the person who checked mine was very nice and friendly.
Human Biology area is great for tired feet as their is plenty of areas to sit while the children play.
