I have visited Paphos many times now, and it still remains one of my favourite holiday destinations. Every single time, I have stayed at the Nereus Hotel, a small family run hotel in the back streets of Paphos.
The Hotel Situated about a five minute walk from the sea front, the Nereus is an ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the harbour, but close enough to be part of it. As I said before, the hotel is family run, and is well known for it’s friendly atmosphere. Many of the guests there return annually. The hotel has a restaurant, a bar, two swimming pools and a gym. The service from the waiters and the receptionists is great. They bend over backwards to help you out.
The Rooms On our first few visits, the rooms were really good. However, the past couple of stays, they have gone downhill. They are in need of a makeover. The air conditioning is not very good, but just about gets by. The rooms have two single beds which can be pushed together, a TV, a wardrobe, a safety deposit box, air conditioning / heater and most have a private balcony. All of the rooms also have a private bathroom.
The rooms are kept fairly clean, but as I said, they really do need to have some more money spent on them. They are quite small, but are perfectly adequate to use as a base to explore Cyprus. The bathroom has a bath/shower, a toilet (surprise surprise) and a sink (wow). The sort of thing that you would expect from a three star hotel.
The hotel also has apartments, which I have not stayed in. I have heard that they are good though. I have found this description of the apartments on the Nereus website.

The Restaurant The restaurant at the Nereus offers an ‘a la carte’ menu and has a buffet twice a week. The waiters are extremely friendly and the food is good, depending on which chef is cooking. A salad buffet is included as a starter. The carvery offered on Sunday as really good. The restaurant is open for quite a while, so you can go down more or less when it suits you.
The breakfast on offer is pretty much the same everyday. They have toast, ham, cheese, cereal, bacon, egg, sausage etc.
The Bar The bar at the Nereus is open all day and has lots of different drinks on offer. They have the usual sort of stuff, beer, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks. In the evening, you may find it hard to get a seat in the bar, but you can sit with your drink in the reception area. They have daily entertainment in the bar, ranging from pub quizzes to karaoke and live bands. The atmosphere in the bar, as with everywhere else, is really friendly and light hearted. There is also a pool table in or around the bar (depending on the time of year, it is either inside or outside).
I have only used the gym once, and that was ages ago (I wasn’t meant to, you’re meant to be 16). It featured all the usual stuff; a treadmill, weights, bikes etc. I don’t think that it costs anything to use it, but I’d check that at reception.
The two swimming pools are a fair size. The one in front of the bar can get crowded, or have lots of people sitting round. But the second swimming pool is up some steps, and is less popular. I don’t know why, as I prefer the second pool. A small paddling pool is on the side of the second pool that I mentioned, as is a sort of Jacuzzi thing. The Location The Nereus is about a five minute walk from the front (I could do it in about two, but I walk fast). On the way to the front, you pass a few restaurants and clubs. You can also walk through the small shopping centre underneath the Paphos aquarium. Another alternative route to the front takes you past a nice little church. The front of Paphos boasts some great restaurants (I would recommend the Moorings), some small gift shops, some jewellers shops and the famous fort. There is a one way system around the back streets of Paphos, but once you get the hang of this, the Hotel is easy to find. With regards to supermarkets, there is a small one opposite, another small one just down the road, and a larger one just up the road. If you find it difficult to walk, you may find it difficult to get down to the front, as the kerbs are very high. Trying to get my Granddads mobility scooter down there was not fun.
My Opinion I really enjoy staying at the Nereus, partly because I went there often as a child and they recognise me, and partly because of the really friendly atmosphere. I think that the rooms have gone downhill slightly, but are still OK if all you intend to do is sleep in them. Paphos is a really nice place to visit, and if you cannot afford the really post five star hotels there, then the Nereus is perfect.
