Some people love nerja, others hate it. I think it depends on what you expect when you come here and what you came to spain looking for.
When I first travelled up to Nerja I was told "its full of lager louts", "Its all british", " its full of tourists you can´t move".´This is not strictly true. Yes the british are here, and sometimes in great numbers but I have always found them to be a friendly well behaved bunch.
Nerja is a lovely coastal town on the CostaTropical. It is also listed in many guildes and brochures as the Costa del Sol which is not strictly true and the local certainly don´t regard themselves as being on the Costa del Sol. It´s clean, lively and bustles with life all year round. True in the height of summer there are many more tourists and you are unlikely to go anywhere and not hear an english voice but there are some great little spanish bars to be found if you want to. The Round Bar, just up from the balcon de Europa ( the local focal point for everything) is a treat serving excellent spanish tapas. If you want to go more rural and basic there is a hidden and little known bar in the barrio below the Hipersol set in an old stable. Here at the right time of night you won´t here an english accent for miles. The price is great 1€ for a drink and tapas and the locals are very friendly but if you want marble and meditteranean bling this one is not for you. Another very spanish bar is El Pescadoro, again off the balcon. You´ll have no trouble finding it, the noise assaults you down the street. Again it is full of spanish, who tend to speak loudly, and has what I think is the best fresh fish in town, both in its restaurant and as tapas. It´s so fresh you can see it wriggle!
If you browse the brochures there are many styles and types of accomodation available from small selfcatering apartments to large exclusive villas, small pensions to your big all inclusive hotels. Nearly all the tour operators come to Nerja but don´t be afraid of booking it yourself.
Whilst the spanish like you to try their language, there is a lot of english spoken in Nerja. I would recommend trying just a few word, gracias and por favor, hablas Ingles? The spanish are much more willing to speak english if they think you respect their language.
I could write for hours on Nerja theres a lot to say. It has plenty of local attractions, the Caves being the most famous, traditional tourist pasttimes of horse and carriage rides, the little town train etc. and of course the beach. What it doesn´t readily have is a golf course. There is one not far away at velez Malaga but Nerja is not really for the golfing officionado. More the beach lover. It has a great range of restaurants to suit every pocket and taste. For those travelling with children this is a godsend, you can find food they recognise whilst still haveing the opportunity to eat something spanish yourself.
If you want to book yourself I have found Monarch scheduled to be the best. Their prices are amongst the cheapest but the seats are much bigger and the service beats flybe and bmibaby every time. Easyjet and Thomson also fly in regularly. Most people come in via malagaairport which is about 1 1/2 hours drive but Granada airport has recently opened for flights and at the moment you can get great deals.
Don´t come to Nerja if you want a taste of real spain but if you want something familiar but with a taste of the overseas give it a go.
