Two years ago, three friends of mine and me decided to go on holiday in historic peninsula town of Nesebar, Bulgaria. Bulgaria has always been famous in my country for the quality of the Black Sea beaches. I’m from Macedonia and my country has a border with Bulgaria from the East side. We went there by bus and from my city (Skopje) to Nesebar is about 12 hours. But if you are living far away, like in UK for example, the best way to get there is by plane. The bad thing is that first you have to get to Sofia, the capital, and after that to take an internal flight to Burgas or Varna. If you are going on pack holiday you can have a charter flight to there as well.

Once in Bulgaria getting to Nesebar is easy: every forty minutes there is a bus from Burgas, which is in 35km down the coast. There are also regular minibuses from Burgas, and infrequent "water taxis" from Sunny Beach, as well as an express bus service, running four or five times a day in summer, from Varna.

We arrived in Nesebar at 8 o’clock in the morning and many local people offered us a room to stay. We had many offers and finally we took the cheapest one, only 6 leva - (Bulgarian currency) per night, which is about 2 pounds. Our room was 2 minutes away from the local beach. But anyway there is a wide choice of accommodation available, largely consisting of a growing number of small, family-run hotels. But be careful because these tend to fill up quickly during summer, and it’s always better to book in advance. That’s the best time to go there. The temperatures are about 30 to 40 degrees and the water in the sea is 27-28.

Nesebar is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria and has two parts: old city and new city, we were stationed in the new one, where there are a lot of discos and nightclubs. In the old city there are a lot of ancient churches, restaurants and museums, rash of shops and outdoor coffees.

Before to go to Nesebar we heard some stories about gangsters, who are very dangerous, but to be honest we haven’t seen any of them.

Nesebar is on only three kilometers south of Sunny Beach. Usually we were there all day. There you can find a lot of hotels, which are made in the last 10 years and are mainly for tourist from West Europe. Hotels are quite expensive for Bulgarian and Macedonian people. During the night you can chose between two options: new city in Nesebar (restaurants, nightclubs, local music…which are cheaper) or Sunny Beach (discos, nightclubs, good DJ, great parties till 6 o’clock in the morning, and of course it’s a little bit expensive). If you speak English, you don’t have to worry about the communication with the local people, because most of the Bulgarians speak good English or at least they have got basic knowledge in it.

Let me tell you something about the prices there:

New city: entrance in discos – 1 pound, whisky/coke – 1.2 pounds, local beer (which is quite good) 0.3 pounds, budwaiser, amstel or Stella 0.5 pounds. Dinner for 4 people including salats, drinks, main course and dessert is about 10 pounds. The typical Bulgarian breakfast is a pancake, omelets or fried slice. For lunch or dinner you always could have an excellent chicken and chips, washed down with a bottle of white or red wine. In every disco between 00:00 and 1:00 there is a happy hour and you can get 4 tequilas for 0.40 pounds.

Sunny Beach: entrance in disco – 1.3 pounds, whisky/coke – 1.4 pounds, local beer 0.4 pounds, budwaiser, amstel and stela 0.6 pounds. Dinner for 4 people there is about 14 pounds.

If you are stationed in Nesebar and you want to go in Sunny Beach you can catch taxi for only 2.3 pounds. If you are four people that is going to be very cheap.

My advice is to pay everything in cash, because their credit card system is not very reliable, 70 per cent of the small restaurants and coffee shops don’t have it at all.

We had there a very good holiday, if I can say holiday, because on the last day we were so tired from clubbing, parties and walking around so we went back home extremely exhausted but so happy!
