Despite suffering from the worst case of tonsillitis I have ever had, not to mention the added sunstroke, I really enjoyed myself on this holiday. Sunny Beach is suitable if:
· You are a family · You are going to Bulgaria for the first time · You enjoy sitting by the beach or pool · You like cheap shops and decent food. · You like hot weather!
What to do:
· Go to the Nesbar Centre – great for shopping during the day, also has great clubs and discos at night. Mostly within walking distance, or there’s a cool little train that operates for about 50p a person, which will take you there. (A taxi will charge you about £7!) · Ly on the beach – its very pretty, great
water, had a nudist part. · Most hotels offer great facilities for you to take advantage of, so if you are bored, (or like me, hotel-bound for half of it…) jump in the pool or something! · Lots of locals offer great massages and treatments, either on the beach, by your pool, or as a little booth on the street. (This is actually very good, and very worth the £5 you would pay!) · There are lots of Internet cafes, and some hotels have their own anyway.
What you’ll be spending:
Bulgaria is a country where you will very likely not spend a lot. The euro has made some holiday destinations very expensive, but the Bulgarian Leva means that food, drink and clothes are way too easily affordable! I went to the supermarket everyday to buy a packet of gorgeous chocolate biscuits that only cost about 15p. Evening meal for 8 people, including a couple of bottles of wine, came to about £20-£30. (And this is for fresh barbeques, steaks and kebabs!) My little sister went on a major spending spree and we had to buy another suitcase (£3.50) just so we could get the lot home!
The Food
I am usually fairly anxious about half-board holidays. If I don’t like the hotel food, and the local cuisine isn’t much to speak of, there are no facilities for me to live on self-made pasta for the duration of the holiday. However, walking from one end of Sunny Beach to the other (30-60 mins if you have the time for a nice walk), you will only be bombarded with choices. Most places are grill restaurants, and your meal is cooked to order – steaks, kebabs, chicken, veal etc. most menus have something in the way of potatoes, chips, omelettes, and often kids meals as well. When I was there, I also noticed a fair few Chinese and Italian restaurants too. Everything of course, is dead cheap, and you get lots of food for your money!
The Stuff I did:
· Went on one of those harness bungee things. Got off and threw up, but went straight back on the next night… · Was pulled onto a restaurant stage with a few other English tourists to play a traditional game…and won a bottle of local larger! · Went to a really cool nightclub (had to walk 20 mins there and back, even thought taxis available.) it was really good and value for money! · Did a lot of shopping! · Made a few nice friends · Got my hair braided · Got a great tan. · Took a lot of antibiotics, painkillers, lozenges, medicine (not Bulgaria’s fault though) · Got loads of (fake) designer perfumes and bags for my friends! · And loads more but I cant remember right now!
Bad Points
Bulgaria is a developing country – there are beggars on the street, and you have the same chance of being pick-pocketed as anywhere. Its heartbreaking to see stick thin women with half a dozen kids sitting by the road, but its generally better to give them your spare change at the end of your stay – do it before, and they will remember you and beg for more. Giving them some food or water is also a good idea. As with any beggar, while they are starving, you don’t know where the money will go
Bugs.
If it rains, it rains. But it’s still warm though. And it dries up pretty quickly!
If it’s a clubbing holiday your after, Sunny Beach is not for you.
the language is not easy to learn. many olocals have a hard time understanding some english. keep your patience, and use body language or even pictures/postcards to get where or what you want if necessary.
Conclusion:
Its well worth trying out – a great holiday, there’s something for everyone!
