The Nether Edge Hotel in Sheffield was the chosen location of a Wedding Party Reception when a good friend got married yestersay (Saturday 8th April 2006). Although it is located only about 3 miles from where I live I knew that there was going to be a late (very late) Bar and so I decided along with a few other guests, and the Bride & Groom to book a room for the night.
THE LOCATION
The Nether Edge Hotel 21-23 Montgomery Road Nether Edge Sheffield South Yorkshire S7 1LN
Telephone: 0114 255 4363
It is directly on the number 22 Bus route from the city centre and there is a Bus Stop right outside. By Bus is it less than a ten minute journey from the town centre, which will currently cost you £1.50 for a single fare.
THE RECEPTION ROOMS
The
Nether Edge Hotel is quite a small Hotel, situated within the rather affluent, leafy suburb of Nether Edge to the North-West of the City Centre. It is in an area where there are some magnificent Victorian and Edwardian Houses and this Hotel actually spans two of these stone fronted Victorian Houses that have been converted and extended at the rear.
We arrived during the early afternoon when the Reception party had already began. Checking in was very quick and easy. We were taken to our Room on the second floor, left our belongings and headed back downstairs to the Reception.
There are two separate function rooms downstairs. The largest of these with its own Bar had been privately booked for the 80 or so people that were attending the Wedding Party. This room is very tastefully decorated and has more of a feel of a traditional country Pub than that of a Hotel reception room.
The second room which also has its own Bar was open to both the general Public and other guests that were staying at the Hotel. In this room there was live entertainment during the evening with three different bands playing acoustic sets.
The food that was served was simple but effective and was self service. The main dishes included Chicken, Several different types of Curry (including a vegetarian option), Lasagne and Chilli. The quality of the food was excellent and highly recommended.
The prices at the Bar were also surprisingly inexpensive, I had feared grossly inflated bar prices but at £2.20 for a pint of Fosters this was not the case.
THE ROOM
The room was quite small but very clean and had everything that you would need for an overnight stay or short break.
The bathroom was quite spacious with both a bath and shower, plus toilet and sink, but no bidet.
We had a smoking room so ashtrays were provided but non smoking rooms are also available.
The best thing about the room was however the view which had commanding views across the city, which made me realise just how green a city Sheffield is.
PRICES
As part of the Wedding Party we had special room rates and paid £40 for a twin room, which included a full English breakfast the following morning.
Normal tariffs for the room are from £35 for a single room, or from £50 for a twin/double room. Family rooms with Cots are also available.
There are a total of 28 rooms all with en suite facilities.
FACILITIES
There is a private car park which always seemed to have adequate parking space.
There was a large disabled toilet in our reception room and at least member of the Wedding Party was in a wheelchair and didn't seem to have any problems. There are lifts up to each floor as well as alternative routes to the three floors via stairs. Each floor has a fire escape at each end of the corridor and there are also fire and smoke alarms that are clearly visible, as well as a sprinkler system installed.
MY OPINION
Overall I thought that the Nether Edge Hotel was an excellent choice of venue. It is a privately owned, family run Hotel, and this certainly shows in the friendliness of the staff who were very polite and helpful at all times.
It is also excellent value for money and an ideal base for anyone visiting the City of Sheffield for a short break. The rooms were rather small, but very clean and cosy, and the beds were very comfortable too.
Highly recommended as a low cost short stay Hotel.

Great review and I get the impression that there is a high emphasis on the personal touch here.
